Hippies are just known by another name these days:

Liberals

Not all hippies are (ugh) Liberals.....some of us are Anarchists and Libertarians. Some of us don't believe in government at all but we "play the game" because, frankly, it's often amusing as heck to watch all the antics and shananigans that "the man" tries to pass off as sensible "leadership".

Believe me, I'm the least political guy you will ever meet but I just can't pass up an opportunity.

When an opening is left it has to be filled!

I guess I had always figured they were just too lazy and drugged up to bathe and get a job and then blamed it on "the man". Now you see a lot of hippies that got out of their drug haze and realized that in order to eat they needed to get a job. Now they're conservative suburbanites. Sheesh.:shk:

Where did the Hippies go?
Well speaking for myself, I just grew up! I was in my teens in the late 70's, early eighties. My hair was extremely long. Jeans, a thermal underwear T-shirt, and an unbuttoned flannel shirt, topped off with engineer boots were my uniform.
We weren't called hippies, but "Freaks". In school you were a jock or a freak.
Jimi Hendrix was what was usually in my tape player.

As far as what you missed.....Hmmmmmm.........
I really don't remember, if you know what I mean.
The 3 functioning brain cells that I have left deleted that part of my life from memory..........

We're still here.
But like my namesake (
)benevolent tyrant said, some of us are Libertarians.

I can't believe some of the silly ideas people have about hippies.
Get a clue, please.

My hair is very long, parted straight down the middle and straight as a board!
And I wear Birks!

Just as with any group, you can't really greneralize all hippies. We're all still people and have different views and personalities, values and dreams. That's for you, closettrekkie.

Why is it that hippies only shop at wild oats and eat organic food?

While we do eat some organic foods, we're not exclusive, but every little bit helps.

And the reason is because I don't like putting pesticides, hormones and other cancer-causing crap that's in grocery store meats and veggies in my body.
Besides, they taste about 100 times better than the cardboard fruits and veggies available at your local Safeway!

We buy clean meat and there's NO comparison! You'd never go back to store-bought beef!

It is very easy to get confused nowadays with all of the 'neo-hippies.' I consider myself to be an environmentally conscious, politically aware, productive member of society. I am also considered, by most, a hippie. Hippies are not wooks.

It is important to make the distinction between a hippie and a wook. Hippies can generally be viewed as positive, optimistic members of society with an idealistic goal for the betterment of society. Wooks are everything that you've been warned about in regard to hippies wrapped into a neat little package.
www.urbandictionary.com...[/url]

When people think of a 'hippie' they think of smelly kids with dreadlocks running around dancing to bad music, clearly on drugs. this is not the norm! we are great people, with great ideas and a sense of something more innate and natural in this world.
we are the people who don't consume high fructose corn syrup, and are deathly afraid of growth hormones.
we are the people who shut our televisions off and take our children OUTSIDE to play.
we are not wooks. please don't confuse the two. ever.

Old hippies dont die, they just fade away.

I beg to differ that Liberals & Hippies are the same thing. If they are, then we could compare neo-cons to Nazis couldnt we?

But i'm not here to flame, i'm here to tell you i would much rather be a liberal than anything else.

Ha ha...you and me both!
We weren't hippies, lombozo, we were freaks.
Hippies were about peace and love.
Freaks were about getting totally ripped (on whatever was at hand) and getting into trouble, raising hell, going to concerts & parties. I agree in high school (I graduated in 1981), you were either a jock or a freak (or just a nobody, LOL).
But, for the most part, lombozo, we were really the 2nd generation of hippies.
Our older brothers and sisters were the first (1967-1973).

The real, original hippies (late 1960's-early 1970's) never wore dreadlocks........these are the newer "wanna-be" hippies of today. Who are so totally different from the hippies of days of old, that there's really almost no comparison.

clearly there is no comparison between the hippies of the 60's and the 'neo hippies' of today (dread locks etc....) However, there is definately still a counter culture of peace, love, and the common good. We are the real 'neo hippies' but it is a common misconceptioin... society wide..is all i'm getting at..

I'm still a hippy and proud of the awareness that I was fortunate enough to acquire during the days of "drugs, sex and rock and roll". In fact I feel sorry for the uptight, emotionally constipated, lameass, suits that think money and expensive stuff is the way to impress people. Rat Race!
Peace, Grace and serinity in life is so much more important than stuff.
Insults of my life style just shows me that my decision to live "counter culture" was the right one. I don't care what anyone else does as long as they leave me alone. Live and let Live! Don't get me wrong; I also feel fortunate to live in a country where alternative life styles are tolerated somewhat. I also am thankful for a country where the free enterprise system flourishes because I have been a receipient of its blessings thru the exercise of hard work and a wonderful education.

Peace and Love!

Rock on my Brothers and Sisters!
