If the mods want to penalize me points for a "oneliner".... fine. That's just the cost of doing business here at ATS sometimes.

If what you have to say can be said with a 1-liner, then that's not a problem, as long as what you say is on-topic and contributes to the discussion. It's the sniping off-topic stuff that this thread is about.

A line like 'This is BS' gets a warn and a line like 'This is BS because (reason)' does not. Does that clear it up?

Sometimes a one word answer is very elegant.

For instance in a long post where the person asks about how to 'fix' their exercise program, one word can say volumes:

"Coach"

(meaning investigate coaching, get a coach, get expert advice)

In a post about 'Self Defense' two words can encapsulate an elegant reply:

"Gun-Fu" &
"Run-Fu"

(meaning, trying to use pepper spray, or fight a big determined attacker is not a good idea. The experts say you really need to run or have a gun to protect yourself against a determined predator).

So, short elegant replies that are info-dense = good.

Clearly joking replies with one or two words that shares a pop-culture 'geek reference' = good. (Joss Whedon, Buffy, Angel; Aaron Sorkin, West Wing.)

But mocking, doofus, not well thought out replies = waste of time.

The mods will let the user explain, I take it. A careful, well-researched poster who gives detailed and referenced replies would have more latitude, I'd think than a constant 'one-liner', using sarcasm and put down.

2 cents

Perhaps a refresher on one-liners will help.
Content is the number one criteria for one-liners, imho.

Here's what on of the Amigos has to say:

One Line or less Responses or "me too" atta-boy comments contribute nothing to the discussion. These include rows of smilies, "you're wrong", or other similar short responses.

Each mod has the ability to apply nominal points warnings (20 points) for both of these minor board infractions. Please help us maintain the best discussion board possible by considering your responses in both content and length.

If there wasnt a point system, which i have just found out about, would this even be an issue? lol
Sometimes a one liner provides a needed "bump" to a good topic that may have been buried in the forum. I didnt read the entire thread, so if someone has already mentioned this, i apologize..

Absolutely, it is most likely a data storage and processor issue. Regardless of the content, each post is fully formatted with avatars, links, etc.....

It is a desire to store, process, and serve the highest quality content possible with the most efficient use of resources.

An entire post consisting of "you da man", does not fit the criteria.

Am I missing the rule that also says the mod may delete the entire thread because of one liner follow-ups?

It's already been stated, in this thread, that short, one line posts on topic are not the problem, so what is your problem with that?

If a thread is started giving an opinion where there is no clear right or wrong answer, wouldn't all following posts be based on opinion of the subject matter?

I think the following rule from the Terms and Conditions covers this;

8) Right of Community Management This is a privately owned discussion board community. The Owners and senior moderator staff reserve the right to take action against any member who is deemed to be devoted purely to disruption, whose actions represent behavior contrary to community building, or whose content is contrary to the core ideals of AboveTopSecret.com. This action may include complete banning of your username and IP address. The owners of AboveTopSecret.com, LLP reserve the right to eliminate or edit any content deemed inappropriate for the discussion boards, news network or any affiliated sites.

And the point of you posting this here considering you are not referring to a mod, but the founder and co-owner of this very website...

After our U2Us, the reason I trashed a (fairly new) thread was because your off-topic posting had derailed the thing entirely. That is why!

I'd hoped you had the common sense to keep such private discussions off the board but obviously I was hoping too much.

I think mods here act more like government agents that smother free speech at times.

Who wants to be a part of this forum if they are afraid of what rule they may break by participating?

Is ATS above constructive criticism?

You are free to leave if you don't like how this board is run.

We make alot of effort to provide a sensible and professionally-maintained forums site where anyone can post about a large array of "alternative" topics.

Perhaps you can find a different discussion community with no decorum rules of posting where trolls and flame-wars run rampant that would suit your taste better.

Well, that's quite an insult. You have NO idea who the staff is comprised of and yet you are prompted to insinuate that we are govenment hacks. Sad.

Wait a minute... when you joined, MiahX, you agreed to abide by those very rules. If you disagreed, then you would not be a member... end of story.

Is ATS above constructive criticism?

No...never... and I have seen members rewarded significantly for such criticism. But there is also destructive criticism. 'If it ain't broke, why fix it' is a mantra I agree with and the success of the Aliens and UFO's forum is a testament to that.

If you read pg. 1 of this discussion, you'll see that on-topic 1-liners are not the problem... unless you post a dozen consecutive 1-line, but on-topic posts.

SloS13 and MrPenny... thanks for the excellent humorous examples of off-topic 2-liners.

This is the wrong forum for predictions. Those belong here:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

As for your other banter, that should be directed to Complaints/Suggestions:

Where it will receive the swift attention it deserves.

That was fast!

A lot of times I think one liners make the most important statements.

Half the time when someone writes something long, it's mostly babbling rhetoric.

I seriously think if anyone has the urge to post one - liners, don't do it here. Don't post one - liners here.

One of the most helpful hints when replying onto a thread is actually reading it first.

It will save you the trouble of seeing how often what you wrote has been covered.

In this case about 6 times.

Anybody else get a different count?
