My favorite metal bands:

ISIS, Neurosis, Back When, The Autumn Project, SUNN 0))), Emperor, Burzum, Converge, Paria, Breather Resist, Kayo Dot, Jesu, Pelican, Mare, These Arms are Snakes, Immortal, Graves at Sea, Wolves in the Throne Room, Giant Squid, Mastodon, Ocean, Minsk, Old Man Gloom, Opeth, Swallow the Sun, Swarm of the Lotus, Yob, Tarantula Hawk, Tusk, Cult of Luna, Cryptopsy, Devin Townsend, Strapping Young Lad, Cave In (Not really metal anymore), Arsis, Behometh.

I could go on forever.

But as you can see, its mostly doom, prog, and black, with some death sprinkled in.

PS. Whoever said Cradle of Filth was Black Metal gets a big thumbs down.

Black Metal- Type O negative, Cradle of filth, Dimmu Borgir

Out of curiosity, where did you get the idea that Type O Negative is Black Metal? They don't even SLIGHTLY resemble Black Metal.

And Nevermore pretty much crushes all the bands out there today

Great list! Very similar to mine.

Right now, my favorite metal band would have to be High on Fire.

A lot of "metalheads" wouldn't agree that Cradle of Filth is black metal. Many black metal fans throw out Cradle of Filth, and Dimmu Borgir because they are more mainstream, and just flat out stink. But putting labels on music really means nothing anymore because there are so many diferent genres of metal. If you like it, listen to it.

My favorite metal bands however would be:
Necrophagist, Dream Theater, Psycroptic, Skyfire, Kalmah, Soilwork, In Flames (old), Old Man's Child, All Shall Perish, etc... Theres too many to name. I'm mainly into any types of Death Metal.

I honestly have to say my hubby's band, Bloodmasqueand Pantera esp The Great Southern Trendkill. I can't stop listening. And Im not just saying that because I am partial. theyre really heavy and thrashy, but also have some rhythm. They're playing at Jaxx in W Springfield VA with Overkill on Jan 27th if youre interested.

I know way too many good metal bands. I think my favorite changes way too often. But I just recently bought the new GOJIRA cd and it freakin rules. If you like metal, check it out. I'd say it sounds a little mastadon-esque but maybe a little heavier.

Good ol' metal. You just can't go wrong with it.

Alarum, Protest the Hero, and Between the Buried and Me have become my recent favorites.

However, Opeth might be the only band I can call my all time favorite. They aren't one album wonders like Cynic, and don't vary in quality like Dream Theater or Death. Every album is consistantly amazing.

So yeah,

Opeth

I strongly disagree with this statement. Nu metal is not an abomination, and it is considered a subgenre of heavy metal.
It's metal, just with heavily distorted guitars, and with a bit of hip hop.

Hurray for Coal Chamber!!

I cant believe no one has mentioned Chimaira.Been getting into All that Remains, thats not to bad.Saw Lamb Of God a couple of months ago mean as live.Worst live metal band Slipknot,so bad corey cant sing live fluffed half the lyrics as well. The only redeeming part was a short drum solo by joey.Have to say Hatebreed was one of the best live bands Ive seen.Fear Factory are worth a mention sure they've got a couple of crap albums but you get that with quite experimental bands there awesome live too.Mate i could go on indefinitely on this topic
