WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A last-minute "October surprise" -- a dramatic news event that shakes up the U.S. election -- could be a big wild card in the final three weeks of the fight for control of Congress.

With Democrats threatening to sweep Republicans out of power in Congress in the November 7 elections, a late-breaking foreign crisis, terrorist attack or a new scandal could change the debate and shape the ultimate outcome.

The possibilities are numerous, as President George W. Bush juggles multiple foreign threats like North Korea's nuclear tests, Iran's nuclear ambitions and civil war in Iraq, along with mushrooming Republican scandals at home.

"There is a huge potential for some sort of October surprise that changes the dynamic, something that reminds everyone just how unstable the world is," pollster John Zogby said.

While most late-breaking events are beyond the control of politicians, plenty of conspiracy theorists expect the White House to make a late attempt to halt Democratic momentum.

'NO SURPRISE'

"It should come as no surprise if the Bush administration undertakes a pre-emptive war against Iran sometime before the November election," Gary Hart, a former Democratic senator and presidential candidate, predicted last month on the Huffington Post, an Internet site.

I just read this on yahoo news. I find it sort of odd to read this on mainstream. I dont know if that should make me confident nothing is going to happen, or if it should make me even more nervous for the world situation....? all I know is I am going to be watching world events pretty closely for the month of october...

That is a good point it is kind of odd that it's on mainstream media...anyone have gut feelings or intuitions on this topic? This could get interesting that's for sure.

Donald Rumsfeld demission? Nuclear attack against the US from the big bad Al-CIA? Big scandals of corruption in the democrat party? A democrat party member linked to Al-CIA? Strikes against Iran? Strikes against North Korea? False-flag operation in the middle-east? Retreat in Iraq? Capture of Osama Bin Laden? A big terrorist plan stopped by the CIA? Invasion of Cuba? Demission of Karl Rove?

We'll see in the next days... the ramadan end on october 24, so they could stage something within now and the 24...

I dont have a gut feeling about october really, but I would say that i have a biiiigg feeling that something, is going to happen, and its going to effect all the countries on earth. name it WWIII if you want, but I just do not see;

given the current situations in, africa, venuzela's political anger against US, mexican immigration problems in US, wars in Iraq, and Afganistan, potential war in Iran, N.K.'s nuke tests, How there cannot be some sort of huge war, look at the allies of U.S. and look at who enemy's. They are all involved in something that I cannot see ending with a treaty, or some sort of political agreement.

The current world situations are only going to be solved with military action, that is the current bias that we have as a collective point of view. It needs to change but change to a whole populations POV cannot come without great tragedy. But something will be learned in the future. who knows maybe they will finally see that after 3 world wars the "world leaders" will make humanity think as Earth as Earth, and not individual country's.

I think what I said makes sense. forgive me if they are not that clear, its late.

You mean like that fake one they did recently with the 10 planes or something like that?

NK has revealed to China another attempt at a nuke test. With their declaration of war should there be sanctions placed upon them we could see something nasty from them this month still.

Also I believe on Oct 22 or 23rd is the end of Ramadan and purportedly the terrorists are telling the Muslims to once again leave the US because an attack is imminent.

Just my two cents...

Well with only 20 days left till the election, if they are going to do something they had better do fast. Opinions don't change that fast. I don't think the capture of OBL will be enough to help them now.

I think they probably had some thing planned, but the Foley scandal broke first and ruined it. If something happens now, it will look politically motivated and would probably backfire.

Media hysteria of a supposed threat to NFL football stadiums 7 stadiums in total to be hit with a "dirty" bomb...apparently this is supposed to happen this weekend and though it's a threat no one should avoid going to the big games LOL...lordy lordy is this their surprise and let me guess, they'll thwart it JUST IN TIME and we can all thank the administration and republicans for saving us.

Sen. Conrad Burns said at a debate Tuesday night that President Bush does have a plan for winning the war in Iraq, but he isn’t about to share it with the world.
Sour ce

So there is a plan? And we're just not ready to show it to the world? What the hell is that supposed to mean?!?

Without a doubt, I am sure something will happen. Let it be an nuclear attack on the U.S., North Korea conflict, or anything. Its sad to see our countries and this world run by such people like this. I also heard on CNN today (keep in mind I rarely listen/watch the news) that the US will go to any length to defend Japan, and even said was the use of Nuclear weapons on North Korea...

Its probably the capture of the "fake" Osama, OR a huge attack.

I would much rather it be the capture of an Osama like being.

Saddam Hussein's trial verdict (and same-day sentencing if found guilty) is to be on November 5th. Clearly a politically motivated date.

www.cbsnews.com...

I don't know if this would be all that is planned, but it does seem to be a part of it.

Well I don't know if there will be or not, I mean it's not like there
has to be one, though I realize the chance of one not uccuring is
remote.

I think it'll be political (I don't buy into the whole NWO/Secret
global plans thing), perhaps the announcement of the resignation
of a
person people dislike.

Or maybe, and I honestly would love this, though it would'nt sway
my vote, a preemptive, possible nuclear strike on N. Korea.

In all honestly I don't know, I don't really have a bad feeling, so I
don't think anything bad, well atleast nothing bad that will cause
harm to me or those I care about, will happen.

Though I could be wrong, considering I was absolutely bubbly and
cheery 9/10/01.
Which is very odd for me.

It may be that the Democrats beat the Republicans to, with the whole
Foley sandal, and all the other stuff being found out about the Repub-
lican party.

Along with the verdict in the Saddam Hussein trial that takes place two days before the election, the RNC is airing an ad based entirely upon terrorism fears.

www.abcnews.go.com...

WASHINGTON Oct 19, 2006 (AP)— The Republican Party will begin airing a hard-hitting ad this weekend that warns of more cataclysmic terror attacks against the U.S. homeland.

The ad portrays Osama bin Laden and quotes his threats against America dating to February 1998. "These are the stakes," the ad concludes. "Vote November 7."

...

The ad displays an array of quotes from bin Laden and his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahri, that include bin Laden's Dec. 26, 2001 vow that "what is yet to come will be even greater."

The ad also cites al-Zawahri's claim to have obtained "some suitcase bombs," followed by a scene that appears to show a nuclear explosion.
