On October 10, 2006, an Islamic website posted a message alerting Muslims to what it claims is a new insult to Islam. According to the message, the cube-shaped building which is being constructed in New York City, on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in midtown Manhattan, is clearly meant to provoke Muslims.

The fact that the building resembles the Ka'ba (see picture below), is called "Apple Mecca," is intended to be open 24 hours a day like the Ka'ba, and moreover, contains bars selling alcoholic beverages, constitutes a blatant insult to Islam. The message urges Muslims to spread this alert, in hope that "Muslims will be able to stop the project."

Preposterous to say the least! Now why on earth are Muslim extremists doing this and making a laughing stock of themselves?? What's next? 'Hey! Bring down the leaning Tower of Pisa. It resembles a muslim whacker'!!

It's been open for like a year but it's clear glass...I never even thought of associating it with the Ka'ba.

These people need to really chill out

Aside from the name 'Mecca', which I don't find insulting (but then, I'm not a Muslim) seems fine. As for the building being cube shaped, well, how could the cube be insulting to anyone. The Muslims might really think about getting worked up over ice cubes and, for that matter, Star Trek.....the borg craft are cube shaped aren't they?

I think this is a picture of when it was being constructed and had some type of protective covering over the glass. I assure you it is now clear glass and doesn't look anything like the black cube that Muslims worship.

Why did they name it the 'Apple Mecca'? I'm a little confused, its a 24/7 bar?

It looks black to me, so it isn't resembling the black stone. Why would muslims get overrate over a black box?

But mainly what is with the name?

I don't doubt one bit that the bad Apples did this quite on purpose with intent and fore-knowledge of provoking a reaction. It's Jobby's style, always has been. remember "1984" and that add campaign? You know the "Orwellian" one. They are not afraid of pushing the envelope in any way.

Their business depends on a constant turn over of press - the more controversial the better. Is it legal? I bet their lawyers were consulted six ways to sabbath.

Eventually this story will go MSM and guess what? Apple's corporate cache', value and most importantly "consumer-buzz" will escalate somewhat... who knows could even put him over his current legal troubles and "Intel-ization" hassles.

Beyond that it looks stupid, it's supposed to. Simple and easy. A cube. Think about it. That's what "they" want.
