I went into this thread thinking that I could find some interesting discusion about chess and algebra, two topics that I happen to specialize in. Then I find everyone trying to figure out how that guy got banned?

By the way, why did he get banned anyways?

I don't think that you can use algebra to effectively analyze moves, well, at least make good moves. I'm sure that it's possible to find possible moves, but it'll take a while to do, and some of them may suck.

Why make chess more complicated, when it is a complex game itself? I mean, a large majority of the population have an extremely difficult time handling algebra.

The question wasn't whether you could use algebra to determine moves, it was whether you could calculate whether you were in checkmate or not. And that is entirely possible!

And why did he get banned!!!???

Tennis was great, thanks. Two three-setters in all. The courts are a new surface not laid properly so there are a few little deviations and potholes from moisture returning to the surface, a little embarrassing for the contractors. I got a bit sunburnt. Yes, I really do like Nina Simone, I got to see her once.

1. e4 b4?

I'm white at the bottom of the screen. You're black at the top. You technically can't do b4 on your first move... BUT we'll allow it in this game. You have a pawn that has advanced three squares on its first move. Congratulations!

2. c3

BTW, why was ewqazxcv banned?

Good thing I didn't ask something else

Glad you had a grand exciting time at tennis. Still cannot believe YOU like Nina..I first heard of her by way of the movie "Point of no return" fell in love..

Oh, were we fer real playing? I thought you were being silly. ha!

So am I on my second move??? Or must I retreat my first move elsewhere?

otherwise-

2. a2

You really think we can pull this off?

You got me thinking here. I think chess is about permutations and combinations and the numbers are extremely high regarding possible outcomes. Not sure how chess programs work, must be algorythmns that maximize potential outcomes as a champion player would be aware of most and defeat the average PC program.

Does anyone know any good sites to go to to study the basic good attacks and defenses that you should study?

Right, the numbers are extremely high to make a decision in a next move, OR to project through the matrix of possible moves of all pieces involved and then apply statistics and such to determine the optimum move. But the calculations are far less to determine at some point whether there is checkmate or not. It is a doable thing.

Put my G in the 5 spot and it's all on now baby!

Nice chess board as I think I was thinking I was white before you cleared

I am sincerely sorry to report that I visually transposed the 5 and the G in your first sentence and 'spotted' in the fashion expressed by an above poster on occasion.

I will try to make sense of all our moves so far, legal or not, and respond with my two moves tomorrow.

My habit while I have been U2U-incapacitated has been to answer questions in public forums, as part of posts related to the subject matter on topic. It has kind of worked but I will not stretch it any further with you as that would be grossly unfair on you and me and ATS at large.

Chess is great. I have never played a grandmaster who is female, such as yourself, before. It was the domain of nerds and geeks in my younger years and I kept my interest in chess in the closet.

So whats the longest chess game that you've played? Moi has been 6 1/2 hours but i was trippin on lysergic acid diethylamide 25 and getting rather side-tracked.

I think my longest chess game was about 2 years and 3 months.

BTW, why did that guy get banned?

AND.... as importantly....

What happened to ATS Chess as was being bandied about a couple of weeks ago?

We know William doesn't like the 2-dimensional representation, but does that mean we all miss out on this pursuit?

Or is there a common site with reasonable download speeds?

And did CTS as intimated by SimonGray stand for Chess Top Secret, or something else again?
