UFO witnessed in Europe by thousands

I remember seeing this on the news in the UK in the 80's I think it was. It looked like an out-of-focus image of jupiter through a telescope and was shooting all over the sky like a wobbly camera image. It was witness by thousands in a city in Europe.

After the event some idiot scientist wrote it off as an out-of-focus planet, without explaining why it was there or flying round the sky. Talk about denial. Does anybody remember this (it was reported on the BBC)? It must be on the net as it was given huge coverage at the time. Thanks in advance.

No I don't. I'm hoping someone knows what I'm talking about and does. It was BBC news in the 80's. Tons of people saw it and it was filmed. It was filmed from a plaze in an european city I think.
