news.bbc.co.uk...

The Sun's intense activity in the past week will go into the record books.

Scientists say they have been amazed by the ferocity of the gigantic flares exploding on the solar surface.

The past 24 hours have seen three major events erupt over our star, hurling billions of tonnes of superhot gas into space - some of it directed at Earth.

Some experts are saying that the Sun is more active than it has been in living memory.

Dr Paal Brekke, deputy project scientist for the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (Soho) Sun-monitoring satellite, told BBC News Online: "It is quite amazing that the flaring regions continue releasing such strong flares.

"I think the last week will go into the history books as one of the most dramatic solar activity periods we have seen in modern times.

"As far as I know there has been nothing like this before."

The Polyphonic Spree had this to say:

Suuuuuuuuuunnn
Take some time, get away
Suuuuuuuuuunnn
Suicide is a shame
Suuuuuuuuuunnn
Soon you'll find your own way
Suuuuuuuuuunnn
Hope has come, you are saved
And it makes me cry

Because I'm on my way
On my way
On my way
Hey, it's the sun and it makes me shine
Hey, it's the sun and it makes me shine
Hey, it's the sun and it makes me shine
Hey now it's the sun and it makes me shine

Suuuuuuuuuunnn
Soon you'll be okay
Suuuuuuuuuunnn
Soon you'll be okay
And it makes me smile

Because I'm on my way
Hey, it's the sun and it makes me shine
Hey, it's the sun and it makes me shine
Hey now it's the sun and it makes me smile
All around
Hey now it's the sun and it makes me smile
All around, all around!
Ba dada ba da (X 8)

Hey now it's the sun and it makes me smile
All around
Hey now it's the sun and it makes me smile
All around, all around!
Ba dada ba da (X 8)

Meanwhile, MaskedAvatar had another moment clinging to his desk with the thought of spinning around a dying sun on an insignificant mote being killed by his fellow creatures.

Are the causes of solar flares necessarily internal? Can a sun get physically sick, if you looked at it in a personified sense? Why does the "in living memory" part of the article sound so silly?

I think this entire web site is actually working on an elaborate, pre-written script. Think about this:

One series of posts talks about how the sun is dying.

Another series mentions how we crashed a nuclear-powered planetary probe in Jupiter and how it could possibly turn that planet into a new sun.

So they balance out, right? We lose one sun, and gain another.

Am I the only one who thinks that's hilarious? Probably.

Sunspots the size of Jupiter? BILLIONS of tons of hot gas, speeding through solar system? One word: awsome

Regardless the feeling of doom everybody has, this is one kick-arse very cool event

heh good replies

Any change is good change,

Heck it was getting boring just hanging there glowing yellow day after day. We wouldn't put up with it on TV why should we put up with such a boring sun in real life.

Bring it on!!!

has anyone noticed the sun isn't that yellow anymore? it's white now. i have read that it is turning from a hydrogen sun to a helium one. i was thinking one day, "hasn't anybody noticed!?" that night on art ball, he spoke of many emails he had recieved from people noting that the sun was now white. this was last year.
also SOHO has shown many weird things going on.
did anyone see the two "torpedoes" shot into the sun and the resultant HUGE solar flare? or the disks, which some claim are reptilian motherships? comet neat was a great conspiracy, godlike productions was knocked off the web(presumeably by NASA) for publishing the planet killer asteroid photo, which they had tried to censor.
i wonder if chemtrails aren't a ploy to keep a new kind of radiation, which will mutate life on earth, from , uhh... well, ...mutating life on earth, especially humans. that's just a hairbrained theory, but, you never know.

I think that the transition from Hydrogen to helium would take millions of years. It would not be noticeable in your life time.

It would be cool if Jupiter was a sun too. When we are between the two suns it would be daytime 24 hours a day.

He is "Basing it" on another thread where a group of posters *claimed* that the crashed nuclear powered NASA probe that slammed into Jupiter may turn the gas giant into a Sun eventually.

It is _absolute hogwash_ but I made a joke out of it in a post I made to this thread further up.

Good lord man. Wake up.

i'm wide awake, thank you very much. what i meant was the sun transitioning from hydrogen burning to helium burning. what science or math is the millions of years transition period based on?
the jupiter thing is a wait and see. i don't believe in absolute hogwash. you can always miss a spot on those dirty hogs. i don't think jupiter will become a second sun, but i know freeman dyson is a fan of the idea. is freeman dyson full of hogwash too?

Probably. Just another "I read Friedrich Nietzsche so I must be smart!" theory-spouting pseudo intellectual that comes up with groundless theories about things that either no one really cares about or that people see as "Comic book science"

Sometimes I think I'm the only one using the Shift key here. Among other things.

i loVe peoPle that spEak for the maJOrity.
this is a discussion forum. there are no wrong answers. so, real intellectual, what about the helium/hydrogen question? what is your esteemed opinion on the matter? does the sun look yellow or white to you, or are you to busy looking in the mirror admiring yourself to notice? how many years does it take for a star to transition?

Such hostility. You really need to up the Ritalin dosage, seriously.

As for the controversy, there is none. Just flares, plain and simple. No voodoo magic, no doomsday scenario, and certainly no Lizard men invading our planet.

I'm no intellectual, just an "open-eyed" skeptic.

I don't really think that there is anything too much to worry about with the recent solar flares.

However it is strange that we should be getting the volume and the size of this flares so late in the solar cycle.

At the end of the day we understand the mechansim behind what makes the Sun tick, but we could never really model what the sun is going to do as it is just so damm big.

i'm not hostile. it is good to see you know so much.
what you are doing is truth by proclamation rather than truth through research. i would say you are a "closed-mind" skeptic, and i would agree you're no intellectual. the "meds", and "psuedo-intellectual" tactics are tired. ask your handler for some new material.
seriously, please stop attacking me and stick to the topic.

I'm not quite sure where you get this attacking me thing. Truth be told, I never once, in any of the posts in this thread, claimed to be an expert, though I do see others have.

I am merely stating an opinion, something that is not at all illegal in this, or any forum.

I think this whole Sun flare nonsense is just that: Nonsense. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence can see that. Sure, you can pretend the sun is changing color, or that strnage objects are flying in the sky, but facts simply cannot be refuted.

This makes me giggle.

Yes, I would almost bet there would be transition time...eventually, it would be over. Who says we can't possibly be here at the end of the transition?

Another note, for the doom and gloom crowd....

We've got both a lunar, and solar eclipse this month....

FM ... go away .. just go away !!!!

If ur not FM, then I'm sry. But please stop reading his post's n trying to emulate FM's personality. It's sickening.

Everyone here isn't an expert, all they're posting is their opinion, but rather than ATACKING that opinion n saying, give me the proof, attack their opinion by doing the damned research urself. Show them U kno what ur talking about rather than acting like u do n being all snoty bout it .. my gawd, grow up :/

i'm not sure if this is meant for me, but if it is, i don't know what you're talking about. who's FM? freemason? i'm not freemason, this is my one and only persona here at ATS. if you look back, my opinion was the first one attacked. and it wasn't an opinion, it as an observation, which apparently, thousands of people(according to art ball) have also observed. the sun was not appearing yellow, at the time, it has nothing to do with my opinion.
if you check your highschool text book, it will tell you we have a hydrogen sun. if you do some research, you will find talk of helium.
the sun's much more interesting than me. i also, don't claim to be an expert. i don't attack except to put matrix agents/trolls in their place. just my opinion.
oh, gawd, for whom do the bell doth troll?
