If you watched a video that didn't capture the exact impact of the Pentagon attacks, but was taping during the flight path,,, could you distinguish the type of aerial object by the sound it makes as it flies by?

It depends. Cruise missiles, drones, and other similar objects you probably can. Certain types of planes you can, other types you can't. It depends on the engine it uses, and how many other types of planes use that engine. Say the RB211, which is used by something like four or five different types of planes, it would be hard to tell which it was. Where as a Global Hawk, which IIRC is the only type to use that particular engine, as long as you knew what the engine sounds like, then you probably could.
