Well, its hard to feel pity for violent criminals like rapists and murderers getting it up the rear. Their crimes deserve nothing less.

The problem is the non violent offenders and such, who are the ones who get it the most because they cant protect themselves.

Violent rape is not an answer to violent crimes. An eye for an eye isn't at work here. I think anyone brought up on charges for prison rape, be put in a seperate building with other rapists.

The problem is prisoners nowadays have it too good. All the amenities, free gym, free roam, free entertainment, free new release movies, lots of socialization, sit-down cafeteria buffets, the list goes on and on. They won't complain about all those freedoms while in prison on our tax dollars, yet they complain when they are raped.

It's a trade off the system decided for prison standards in the recent century though.

Now if it were old style dungeons with solitary confinement in tight cages, almost nobody would get rape unless it was by authorities or they put their butt up against the bars.

This is insane? You have a terrorist charge at 16 that carried a penalty of 3 months probation? Seriously our law makers need to revisit the definition of terrorism. Obviously, you are not a threat to anyone or they would not have let you out. You probably did the same type of things many teenagers did back when I was growing up. Now people say those things are terrorism. I do not know who these people are that took over our country but they make no sense most of the time.

Prison rape -stay out of prison if you do not want to be raped.

Prison and rape go together.

Well, the only way to preven the butt boinking is to prevent having the ability to butt boink. That means: death, solitary confinement, removal of equipment, having more guards than prisoners. As long as we are unwilling to do that much, our outrage means absolutely nothing.

First let me say that I am not a troll, I read this post and choose to create a different ATS account to post this on to save embarassment or harassment.

After losing my job in Jan of last year due to a lay off and my unemployment running out in March I was incarcerated for non payment of child support for 45 days in a large county jail in Fl. Having never been incarcerated before I was unsure of what to expect of my experience and was pretty worried.

My first couple of days I was in classification in a holding cell, but on the third day I was put into a 2 bunk cell with another inmate and put on 23.5 hour a day lock down. When asked why I was on lockdown I was told that it was due to overcrowding and that eventually I would be moved to a barracks style cell block. The only reason I had asked about lockdown was because when I first entered the jail and was asking about the process they said since I was in for contempt and it was a civil matter I would be in barracks,

Well once I was in my cell with my cell mate he began to ask what I was in for and I told him child support. He then said that I had it easy and he was in for 3 counts of aggravated battery, theft and 2 counts of rape. I eventually found out that he had 3 priors for rape anda long criminal history. I had asked him about the routine in jail and he inquired whether I had been in jail before and I told him no, he said he could tell. The cell I was in had a solid steel door with a closable food slot in it, but the food slot was closed up at all times and you could not see out and no one could see in.

On my 27th night I woke up in the middle of the night to my cell mate exposing himself to me with his genitalia in my face. I am not a fighter or a very big person at 5'6", 155lbs and my cell mate was about 6', 230lbs. He said that if I made any noise he would make sure No one could hear me and I would be sorry, he then raped me. I screamed in pain and was crying but he had my head shoved in the bunk cushion so the guard could not hear me.

When he finally got off of me I began to scream for the guard who at first told me to shut up or I would go to the hole so I said to please send me there and kept screaming. By the time the guard come to my cell my cell mate had beat me up pretty good and I had to go to the hospital for an overnight stay for a broken rib and severe concussion.

At the hospital I told the doctors what had happened to me and they examined me and confirmed that it had happened and treated me for tearing. I ended up acting like I was having severe headaches and was able to stay in the hospital for 4 days before being returned to the jail. As soon as I informed the ddoctors what had happened to me they contacted the authorities and they arrived to interview me.

When they first started their interview they were insinuating that I was making it up to get to go to the hospital and get out of the jail, but after the doctor confirmed it they started taking it more seriously and they eventually charged my cell mate with rape as well as battery against me after a long investigation. The detectives who investigated my case were very arrogant and condescending and one of them actually kind of made a joke of it several times, saying that if I hadn't broken the law I wouldn't have been put in the situation. I reported his actions to his superior but of course nothing was done about it.

When I arrived back at the jail I was put in protective custody which is nothing more than solitary confinement, where I served out the rest of my time unable to have any contact with my family. It was basically h*ll on earth for me. I have been screened for all sexually transmitted diseases which have so far came back clean though I have to get another HIV test again in 6 months, an am going to counseling for my experience. I do not have sex with my wife now due to the fear of a disease combined with the emotional and psychiatric issues I am dealing with.

The worst part of all of this is that I had committed no crime other than being unable to find a job. I have tried to find an attorney to take my case against the jail for having me in with a person that was a known rapist but no lawyer will take the case citing that it would be too involved and hard to prove.

Now I have nothing but distain for law enforcement and the judicial system and can really relate to others that feel the same way about them. Our judicial and prison/jail system is way past being screwed up, it is completely broken IMO.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately, your story is far too familiar. Rape is not part of a mans sentence. Period.

A number of posters in this thread have shown their ignorance to be truly astounding. Life isn't a joke. Prison isn't a joke. Rape isn't a joke.

OMG - for anyone who says, stay out of prison and you wont get raped - that is an insane idea.
So, lets say your sister gets busted for theft or drugs (just a hypothetical) is it okay then for her to be brutalized and raped?

Considering as a society that we can't prevent rape outside of prison, I don't think we're going to stop it in prison.

For all those who are indifferent or don't care, what about people who are falsely convicted? It's easy not to care when a rapist gets raped in prison, but our judicial system isn't really known for fairness or even accuracy.

Just knowing that innocent people do go to jail because of dirty cops and prosecutors or even shoddy circumstantial evidence should be enough for an outcry. What if it was you?

I can understand people saying that they don't care if a murderer or rapists is the victim of prison violence, but usually murderers and rapists are large violent men and the ones doing the raping in prison. Gang members click up in prisons, violent criminals are usually physically intimidating and aren't messed with, the ones that are victimized are the small time criminals with no prison connections.

I am personally disgusted by Americans allowing their prisons to degenerate to the Academies of Evil they are. That Americans tolerate it show just how Evil in America is "normal."

from the looks of this thread, the outrage with people not being compassionate enuf is there.

however, the outrage with the system is lacking except for a few posts above.

look at when we went to deliver democracy in Iraq & Afghanistan, and look at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, there is alot of evidence of a pattern of *sexual* abuse and *homosexual rape* of detainees and prisoners as young as age 11.

www.journalism.co.uk...
boingboing.net...

so not only are Americans being raped in domestic prisons, but some of our troops seem to think spreading democracy by rape of boys and young men in American custody is part of the 'mission' (!)

Rape is the most cowardly, vile, vicious display of lack of self control you can get. It doesn't matter who perpetrates it, rape is rape. If women and children were getting raped everyday there would be outrage. Somehow men aren't considered humans and in prison it's even worse. Most people see prisoners as sub-human, not realising these are you family, brothers, friends and people just like you. Yes, they committed crimes, sometime horrendous crimes but that's why they are in PRISON.

If we keep allowing this too happen, we are no better than the criminals.

Mind you, I can't really be surprised since people don't even help others who are being attacked in the street, they just put there heads down and walk on by.

Most prisoners have it in them to reform and come out better people with the right guidance and support that they never received when they we on the outside. I'd rather my tax money goes towards reforming than raping.

A lot of the prison rapes are committed by the guards. I was watching a documentary, forget the name but it was disgusting. This is what we are supporting. How can prisoners come out of prison with the confidence, drive and determination to stay on the straight and narrow if this is how they are treated. If they don't see the good side of society then what's the point, why not just get the guillotines out and be done with it, waste of tax money to feed them if they aren't going to learn there lessons.

It doesn't benefit anybody but the rapists, psychos and hardcore criminals. The most disgusting criminals are the ones doing the raping like the murderers, child molesters, armed robbers etc. How is this even ''Don't commit the crime or get raped as a deterrent.'' The people getting raped are mostly in there for minor crimes, people that aren't into dominating other people that don't want to physically hurt others (not saying they're innocent but that's what prisons for...).

I don't think we need to try and make prisons a lovey dovey place. In fact I think they should militarise the prisons. Take out the sicko's that let it happen or commit rapes themselves and send them to prison (the guards). Get some order back into the prison systems, make the prisoners work and show them how they are doing a good thing. Give them confidence when they do good things so they can re-build themselves as better, more disciplined human beings. This won't work on some prisoners and those, those can stay in prison with each other, out of the reach of any rape victims.

EDIT: Just to add. Anybody that says its okay to rape people is just a pathetic coward. Rape is never okay, I wouldn't stand by and just let it happen on the streets and I dam well detest that it goes on in prisons. Anybody who says it's okay to rape other people in prisons is just an accomplise to these crimes and should be ashamed. You people should think about why you want other humans to be raped and them ask yourself, ''Is this justice? Is this what we as a society really want?'' End of the day, I stand for justice, fairness, equality in my society. And I thought that is what the majority wanted. I don't stand for rape, murder and oppression. I don't care who commits and who's the victims. We should be fighting this to stop it, at least for our own humanity and self worth.

How can people not feel guilty for allowing the to happen by not marching down to the politicians and demanding change? Allowing this is just as bad as allowing big brother government and illegal wars.

That is just horrific and I feel so sorry for you. I hope one day you'll be able to think about that without the terrific pain that obviously goes with it. Rape is a terrible thing to happen to anyone. The physical act must be bad enough at the time it happens but I'm sure the psychological effects must outweigh that a million times over, and continue for a long time.

It's a pity that these days it's easier to sue your boss for slapping your butt than it is to sue your county for letting that happen to you in jail.

Jails should punish people but to let prisoners punish each other in a free for all should perhaps be left only for the monsters who like that sort of thing.

I'm glad I'm not the only person that detests these acts. I think something should be done about it and the sooner the better. Maybe those of us who disagree with this behaviour should get involved in the solution and actively voice our opinions, join groups that protest these acts.

As I said before anybody who says it's okay is just an accomplice to rape. Not much better than those who commit the crimes.

We need to take a stand and choose what our society should be like. Change can happen but only if we make it happen, or these psycho's and rapists win.
