The UN resolution specifically states Israel may use force to act defensively. Israel have also said that they will not be leaving Lebanon until Lebanese and UN forces take control. Conversely Lebanon are saying they will not be occupying the South until Hizbollah disarm. Then Hizbollah are saying they won't be disarming until the occupying Israeli forces leave. That's a perfect circle isn't it?

I think the fact that Olmert's gov is not being viewed well at home will also serve to aggravate the situation as they try to manipulate public feeling through altering their policy to appease their own voters which is the wrong start point for any successful resolution in this matter which is going to take considerable courage on all sides to implement.

You know what this means. No peace at all. As long as Israel continues to occupy and annex parts of neighboring countries there will not be peace in a very short period of time.

I agree I'm very skeptical but how does it go? 'give peace a chance' right?

BBC Radio 4 Today program (worthy news) just said Israel have said they will continue fighting until UN force in place (which will take 'at least' a week). That doesn't bode well as once one side continues the fight the ceasefire will be all over. Right now though all news wires are reporting a cessation of hostilities.

I honestly dont think the Isreali's want peace, during the beggining of this latest Lebanon conflict they seemed to have Bush and Blair buying them time at the UN by stalling any attempt at a resolution, and now they have piled thousands of troops into Lebanon just hours before the ceasefire and seemingly continued to send more troops after the agreement was signed, they have done this knowing full well that all it will do is stir up a hornets nest.

I read a report about America and Israel conspiring to get Iran involved (by israel keeping troops in the buffer zone) so they can attack Iran. If true things could get very ugly!

The US Iran agenda seems to be fairly well known now. Whether its for developing nuclear power stations or over this or something else. I remember when it was because of a pipeline that was going to run through Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. It seems the actualities of the reasons change but the effect is the same. Iran & Syria are next on the list for the gift of 'democracy' you know the kind, car bombings every day, virtual civil war...

And i reckon Iran will be the last straw for arab countries i can see massive uprisings and some major attack against israel - as there the closest.

You might be very right on that, but yet there will be more than enough other ''enemies'' for the US of A to face. It's just a matter of time before India or China will be declared to be enemy of the state no. 1

The media will start making people feel threatened by Chinese nuclear missiles, as it did back in the Soviet era, as it currently does with Iran, and as it will always do.

Oh i hope im wrong but this current crisis could ignite the whole world there's alot of restraint at the moment but it doesn't look like that tension will hold if America attacks Iran it'll give everyone the excuse they need to fight.

This isnt just some crazy conspiracy or just a theory these events could actually happen under the current political climate and its getting scarier and more likely to happen every day!

I love the 'selective memory' of some of you. Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2001. This entire episode started when hezbolla invaded Israel, killed some soldiers and themn kidnapped 2 others. Prior to that Israel was involed with Hamas only. Hezbolla started it.

I think at this point, the issue is "who will stop it." Pointing fingers and crying foul isn't going to get a ceasefire into place. Of course, this doesn't seem like much of a ceasefire when you're still there, but I didn't really expect anything different from what is happening.

:shk:

Regardless some individuals in this thread are blaming Israel for the current mess. In the past Israel may have taken a 'lighter' approach but times change and Israel will not take hizbolla crap anymore. Israel has a right to defend itself.

er those 2 Israeli soldiers were actually in Lebanon when taken.

I'm not sure Israel has ever gone soft on Lebanon which has suffered ever since Israel became a state (again).

Ariel Sharon when a General presided over and ordered the massacres of the two refugee camps at Shabra and Shatilla and Lebanon has been repeatedly occupied by Israel. It's a shame because Lebanon is a moderate country generally and has been building itself slowly back up over recent years which has now gone to waste again.

Israel have been aggressively expanding from gaza thru Golan Heights and Southern Lebanon to accomodate 'living space' for their growing settler population in a similar fashion to white settlers in South Africa in the 1800s.

Care to post some links to reliable sources regarding the soldiers being in Lebanon?

The initial report filed by Agence France-Presse (AFP) actually said that "According to the Lebanese police force, the two Israeli soldiers were captured in Lebanese territory, in the area of Aitaa al-Chaab, near to the border with Israel, where an Israeli unit had penetrated in middle of morning."

The Associated Press (AP) gave the same version on July 12: "The militant group Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers during clashes Wednesday across the border in southern Lebanon, prompting a swift reaction from Israel, which sent ground forces into its neighbour to look for them. The forces were trying to keep the soldiers' captors from moving them deeper into Lebanon, Israeli government officials said on condition of anonymity."
