Seems there are alotta computer "experts" here so for a hard drive ill just offer my own 2 cents.

150gig 10k rpm Raptor Western Digital for a C: drive
300-500 gig for a D: drive. And Yes they are both SATA. Sata is 150mb/s straight through the northbridge versus 133 max through the pci bus.

Stick with Western Digital. My store has about a 3% return rate out of about 400 a month. Ive returned more Maxtor and Seagate hard drives than seriously needs to be done.

And a good 2 cents that is!!!!

Although I will add that I invested in the 10K a short while ago and have not actually observed any visible performance increase. I am however NOT a gamer. I run some VERY high end forensic programs but that is not really the same.

As for a HDD for the remote hard drive to use to transfer the data, most are configured for IDE to keep the cost down and any one will do for that purpose.

Check out the link I provided and pick something in your price range.

Should the PC have an OS install???? Then transfered?

I do my own install, that way I control everything that is in and on my PC. But that is entirely up to you. I wind up buying a new copy of XP about twice a year because of that, where as if you buy it pre-installed, you forgo that.

Personal preference.

Actually semper, i re-reg bout 20 copies of Xp a week for customers. All you gotta do is call the 1-800 number and answer the dumb questions. Yes this is the only computer its installed on, Yes this is a reinstall(thanx to microsofts inability to stop viruses and spywares)(they ignore that last part)....OK sir heres your new key, place the cursor in box A...Ready? It really weirds them out when i have 5 pcs connected to my KVM and wanna do them all on the same phone call, but they do it. Save ya a couple hundred bux a year, im still runnin the same 4 xp pro keys ive had since Day1. they are Pre SP1 keys, i just use a xp pro sp2 cd and my same keys and whalla, Clean Fresh loads. Oh and they are OEM copies of xp that i use, not retail. But i do OEMs, Retails and upgrades rereg with no probs. Give it a shot man.
