Maybe we can look at it from another stand point. I do not want the card. period. Why should it be mandatory? I don't want any info other than the bare essentials shared on a card. Let's allow the new cards to be OFFERED here in the US. There can be two groups, those who enjoy being good citizens and the rest of us renegades. You all can carry your dna strand, thumb print and affiliations on a special card, the rest of us will happily furnish our driver's license and birth certificate upon request. It isn't so difficult to grasp, if one of us deviants gets a knock to the head and desires a new card, you all can welcome into the fold and praise him for seeing the light.

This isn't about hiding anything or or being criminal, this is about choice. If our leaders want to harvest data and squeeze it all onto a chip, let's discuss it, allow the people a choice. Personally I feel there is too much info being requested these days. So many companies are into hoarding data, now it is suggested that we carry it with us. I wish to ask why. Why is there a preoccupation with others knowing my stuff. I suppose in the name of security is a good bit of propaganda.

I just do not wish to have different databases putting together data that I feel they need not have.

What are the possible ramifications of having to have your national I.D. card scanned to pass from one state to another if they choose to use the card in this manner. The tracking possibilities are huge if they used the I.D. in this manner, I can already hear them saying that they will be able to stop interstate drug trafficking, what would the Illegal aliens do???

We do NOT need an ID card. I dont want one, wont get one, end of story.
We have:
Drivers licenses
Birth Certificates
State ID cards (at least in my state its something you get for a passport renewal)
SSN's (Social Security Numbers)
Fingerprinting
Passports
Tax Stubs (used for drivers license in my state)
Selective Service Cards (Used for the military draft)
Insurance cards
Visas
Green Cards
etc. (to any I didnt add to the long list)

I think we have enough cards already, I dont need a barcode on my forehead. All these systems have not stopped 1 illegal immigrant and WILL NOT stop any of your "terrorists" and shoot they didnt even stop them the first time so whats one more card going to do? NOTHING. Why? Because no one who is comming illegalaly or to blow me up (never going to happen unless the govt. tries to) is going to use a system that requires cards. Remember they are ILLEGAL aliens, thus they dont go into federal buildings, they stay on plantations and at grocery stores who dont declare them in the first place and can be gathered a dime a dozen so why do they care if they get caught? Just go get more! The govt. doesnt put pressure on corporations who hire illegals so your ID card to prevent them is a flop, they dont WANT people with ID cards in the first place because they have to PAY US remember? Why pay $13.75 an hour when you can get an illegal for $1.50 or less an hour? If they complain turn them in and VOILA!!! problem solved and you turned them into the classic man swining from the guilotine to the other workers who might question you! It can also be put as: See what happened to him? It will happen to YOU if you dont shut up about your wage!
Any terrorist with half a functional brain wont bother to use conventional methods anyway, thus your cards wont stop anyone. If you required a passport and a drivers license (over 18 people only, drivers license that is) then you would stop some people from getting on a plane. However I dont recall GROUND CREWS getting checked.... So maybe those of you out there who think a bomb is going to go off in your pants thanks to a terrorist or the plane is going to explode mid-air from a bomb just think about it for a moment. If your so scared of terrorists why dont you start with the GROUND CREWS WHO CHECK AND WORK ON AND IN THE PLANES BEFORE TAKEOFF!!!!! Your ID cards are NOT required by the LUGGAGE HANDLER WHO IS THE LAST PERSON TO TOUCH THE BAGS BEFORE TAKEOFF! AND THEY ARE NOT CHECKED AT THAT POINT!!!!! Go talk to a ground crew guy sometime and watch them at an airport.

Well, I think the ID card could have the State ID, SSN, Fingerprint, Selective Service and Green Card all meshed into one convenient card
. I mean one of the most important cards, the SSN is paper and it CAN'T be laminated.

No one answered my question yet, what is so wrong about having a National ID card? I'm really serious about this question.

Well now I feel ignored. I gave my reasoning to you already. I want to maintain control over my info. If they want to have it, they may go fetch it the hard way.
Have I made my point?

The bill does not call for a federal ID card.

It calls for "a federally approved ID card" with "machine readable technology".

Many people in the United States already have this.

Anyone who live in New York State that has a Driver's License or a Non-Driver ID has this. The ID cards have a bar code with all your information on it that can be read by a machine.

It is ID cards like this that they are talking about ... the IDs all will have to meet standards so they can be authenticated by a unversal system.

I can't believe that some people do not research something before commenting on it.

The title of this thread is misleading.

This bill does not talk about a "national I.D. card".

Do some research!

In most cases, this national ID will come in the form of your state driver's license. This is not surprising. Driver's licenses have been evolving in to de facto ID cards for a long time. We use them to prove our age and identity when purchasing alcohol or tobacco. We use them at airport security checks. Under the new law, driver's licenses will have to meet standards that the Department of Homeland Security will define.
