Some versions state that the name HAL was derived by a one letter shift (see Caesar cipher) from the name IBM, although this has been denied by both Arthur C. Clarke and his fictional character Dr. Chandra, who states that "by now, any idiot should know that HAL stands for Heuristic ALgorithmic" (2010).

Fellow thinkers

As I have watched V for Vendetta now for the second time, I was also searching for people who are looking for a common sense with movies like Fight Club or Lost. Thank you for you interesting thoughts.

At the end of the day, I saw V and Fight Club as signs of our generation, let's say they have the goal to show policy makers that there is a hidden force out there. Not as a threat or a realistic future, but as a hint for the audience that they do have power over the ruling system, if necessary. My favorite line in the movie is:

V for Vendetta: "People shouldn't be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people."

It is no surprise that we are touched by movies like that. They inspire us in many ways. Of course I see the CCTV cameras every day. It is not that we have to be scared of a police state, it is just that we have to be aware that possibility remains. A functioning state lives between extremes, let's say between hardcore pro-state lobbyists and left-wingers who see control of the state on every corner.

Thank God I'm Swiss, but still, remember remember... The power of the masses shall keep the powerholders on the ground.

Thanks for listening, R.

I can't comment about Fight Club, but I certainly didn't get a hidden message vibe from V for Vendetta.

It in fact seemed blatantly obvious in its revolutionary meaning. I almost felt like it as a bit too transparent in its attempts to comment upon currente vents

"A building is a symbol, symbols are ideas..."

He said something like that, and I actually wondered if that was supposed to make us sypathize with the 9/11 perpatrators for a while.

If it is a Trojan Horse, I think the idea would be to make us think we have to wait for someone like V to come along and rescue us, that we can't do it ourselves... if I remember correctly even though everyone "woke up" he was the only one that actually fought against the bad guys at all. So it's l ike saying, "Even if you get it, even though you have us outnumbered, you can still only sit there with your silly masks!"

I completely disagree. In Fight club this there is an attack made by ppl that wanted to restructure humanity at its core , by dematerializing the current form of world "domination" , capitalism. 9-11 was an attack made by (?) " muslims fanatics " attacking the US and after/before that, their allies ( uk etc..). Of course after watching 9-11 fahreneit you may realize that it's not quite that simple , but anyway this is not the subject.
