WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration spelled out plans on Friday to sell $4.6 billion of arms to moderate Arab states, including battle tanks worth as much as $2.9 billion to protect critical Saudi infrastructure.

The announcement came two weeks after the administration said it would sell Israel its latest supply of JP-8 aviation fuel valued at up to $210 million to help Israeli warplanes "keep peace and security in the region."

Saudi Arabia is a moderate Arab state? How do they work that out? Saudi Arabia is a totalitarian monarchy with only vestigages of democracy. It executes women for adultery or for having the misfortune of being raped. It spawned Osama Bin Laden and most of the 9/11 hijackers. This is what constitutes a moderate Arab state?

Or is "moderate" simply code for "on our side". He's a son of a bitch, but he's OUR son of a bitch, to quote FDR.

How do the Israelis feel about their number one benefactor selling billions of dollars in tanks and helicopters to a country that does not recognize Israel? A country who's supreme ruler, King Abdullah, has said that if Lebanese/Israeli cease-fire talks break down due to Israeli "arrogance" then it would entail all out war.

Why would the United States want peace in the Middle East? It is making a FORTUNE selling weapons to both sides of the conflict. The World's oil companies are making record profits off the back of the instability caused. The US and most World governments take a percentage of those high fuel prices in direct excise.

Who wants peace?

seeing as the US is the largest arms producer and exporter its a great deal for their econemy, hell the 7 day war benifited the US big time since after israel destroyed all most all russian air craft and so on the arabs looked towards the US for arms.

fanatic or not aslong as the companies can fill their pockets it doesnt matter who the weapons go to.

he who has money controls almost everything

This has been true through administration after administration concerning Saudi Arabia, although they have never been a “true friend” to the United States.

Most of the arms sales from last year, and it appears the same this as proposed year, are for upgrades and small expansion of ground forces for Saudi Arabia. “Weapon sales” encompasses parts, upgrades, lease extensions, communications…basically anything sold for military use…including what was cited in the article “air conditioner” refits for older version of the M1A1…could you imagine no AC in the Sinai!

Last year it was upgrades to Saudi guard units with communications systems, APC’s, small arms, aircraft parts and I forget the rest (I was watching MOT and ITT at the time)…contracts for the two combined were a hair less than US$1.0 billion.

…anyway, its part of a broader Saudi modernization program established before 2003 which is still continuing; I don’t agree with it; but understand the reasoning portions of the strategic reasoning.
