I am trading my Remington 1100 12 Gauge and $50 for a new Romanian AK with 2 mags and cleaning kit and sling.

My 1100 has a small gash on the stock and a small spot of rust. It's been shot under 200 times.

What do you guys think about this trade? Your opinion would be welcomed.

Lots of information available here: www.surplusrifle.com...

They also cover most other WW1 and WW2 surplus rifles along with some surplus handguns as well.

After you peruse the AK section, you can click on other types of surplus firearms listed in the left hand column.

The Romanians are roughly finished and bear little resemblance in terms of quality when you compare them to Polish AKs or Arsenals. You get what you pay for. I handled a new Polish AK underfolder 2 weeks ago and the quality was amazing, the furniture (wooden parts) alone would not have looked out of place in a dining room table.

Firstly they are not AK-47s any more than a Bushmaster is an M-16, the difference is subtle but worthy of note. From memory (i.e. I could be wrong) the WASR-1 is a 7.62x39, the WASR-2 is in 5.45mm and the WASR-3 is in 5.56mm.

To check the gas tube and front sight alignment, remove the magazine and lock the bolt back to check that the chamber is clear both visibly AND physically (stick your pinky in the chamber).

You then have to violate Firearms Safety Rule #2, namely, by looking lengthways at the gun from the dangerous end. The front sight and gas tube (sits on top of the barrel) should all be nicely aligned with the components to the rear of them (hand guard, receiver cover, and rear sight). I have seen a LOT of WASR-1s that had canted gas tubes, and this is far from acceptable.

However - they work just fine most of the time, and are ok out to maybe 150m or so. For serious research before buying, do some surfing over at one of the AK forums, I think the main site is www.AK-47.net, but just Google it.

Personally I'm an SKS guy. They are much cheaper (I have seen them for $75 a piece on line) and don't scream "Workplace Shooting Spree" when you see one.

You just have to decide what you want one for, plinking, target shooting, home defence, truck gun - or all of the above.

The link works for me.

Do a search for Surplus Rifle and one of the first sights up will be Surplus rifle.com

You may have to do some digging to find a Romanian AK, but it's probably covered.

Another interesting section is "Articles."
Lots of well written stuff on different ways to do things.

It's not WASR. Those are in the magazine Im ording from, but on another page it has simply, Romainain AK-47. It's the one Im getting. But you are saying an AK isint an AK unless it's from Russia? It's has the same parts pretty much as the other AK-47s right?

Also what do you mean by screaming "Workplace Shooting Spree"?

Differences in parts are pretty small between different AK Clones, mostly superficial ones. Big difference is the quality of materials and work, these have huge effects in reliability and accuracy. Most Reliability problest are solvable, but may require gun smithing.

Are you talking about ROMAKs, they're made in Romania and alltough their finish is lousy, they're reliable and accurate enough for military needs.

Best AKs around are SAKO/VALMET, Arsenal and SAIGA

And where Assault Rifles banned in the U.S. in the mid 90's? And does anyone think they could banned again in the U.S.?

Sales of certain types of assault rifles were banned. People who had them already were grandfathered in. Sales of certain capacity magazines were banned.

This did little to stop gun violence in this country or violence period. It was just another of those things that politicians do to get votes while "appearing " to solve crime problems.

Most gun crimes are committed with handguns...not rifles or assault rifles. Assault rifles are just so sensational for the media and thier "victimization" techniques used to get certain political partys for whom they shill into office.

THe next time certain political partys get into office there will be another round of this type of banning to further the aims and votes to maintain power of these partys. It is predictable. It will do little to stop violent crime for which they boast so much. Like so much of this type of operational political pattern ..it will get votes among those who vote with their emotions.

What you very seldome hear on this topic is how often a firearm of any type is used to prevent a crime....by ordinary citizens. This is information and statistics deliberately avoided by the media and politicains. Look for it if you can ever find it. Take notice of the very abscence of this information and by this ...educate yourself.

Thanks,
Orangetom

An AK-47 features a full auto mode, since only semi auto is legal for sale (unless you have a Class III permit but let's not confuse things), we cannot truly buy an "AK-47", this is a common mistake the media loves to make, but is an unacceptable inaccuracy in a weapons forum.

"Romainian AK-47" is too vague, so I'm not sure exactly what you're looking at if it's not a WASR, someone mentioned Romaks, that's a possibility.

As for the "workplace shooting spree" comment, that is simply a reference to the bad reputation associated with AK style weapons based on their use in so many "guy gone nuts" shooting sprees. For example, it was a shooter armed with an AK (a Chinese model I believe) that brought about the end of semi automatic rifle ownership in the UK (other than .22LR). It's the firearms equivalent of owning a Pit Bull.

If you are asking about the British semi auto rifle ban. Just do a Google on "Hungerford Massacre" and you'll see the whole sad tale of Michael Ryan.
