Does anybody have any idea if there are available photos of the asteroid.

I was imagining what it might have been like if the Space Shuttle where up there at just the same time that big rock passed.

Looking out a window and there it is.

Like a flying mountain.

I too am still waiting for some photos. Hard to believe with all the amateur astronomers with telescopes trained that noone got a few shots.

But I'm fairly certain it would be just a dot, not a mountain. I'd still like to see this dot though!

If Openman and I are on the same wavelength, I think we're talking about actual photos of it in transit. Not just the same stock shots that have been up for months.

Maybe even a nice animation of it passing against a starry backdrop.

Well, yes, and a little bit more...

I was wondering if there is such a telescope that might actually be able to take a relatively clear photo of the object using radar first, and then by running it through digital post processing be able to detect even finer details?

Okay, so here's where it gets a little nuts...

How are we able to distinguish, beyond any shadow of a doubt that it is not some form of spacecraft?

Searching google images I found this.

The site that has the image is in Spanish, me thinks.

www.laflecha.net...

You can also follow the path on NASA's Near Earth Object website.

Requires Java runtime to view.

neo.jpl.nasa.gov...

I may be wrong, but I think the images you want are only possible with an orbiter. If there were a telescope able to get a resolution that fine, we could probably put all the Moon Hoax theories to rest.

If I remember correctly that's what happened, too... an orbiter that is. From Japan? Can't recall, but I think that's where the good quality pictures come from.

As far as a craft, if it were a craft shaped like a rock that orbits the Sun, then sure.

Closest approach of 2004XP14 to the Earth was around 430,000 kms. That's slightly further away than the Moon.

Therefore, no decent views from the Space Shuttle.
