Syd Barrett, co- Founder of rock band Pink Floyd, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006. The troubled Pink Floyd founder had spend the rest of his years in his home, his fellow band members said. Syd Barrett was one of the original members of Pink Floyd, but was slowly phased out and replaced by David Gilmour. His mental instability, worsened by prolonged use of acid ('___'), slowly caused Barrett to be phased out of Pink Floyd. He was never kicked out, according to band members, but just wasn't around anymore. He left just before the release of "Dark Side of The Moon", Pink Floyd's most famous album.

This is a sad day for Pink Floyd fans everywhere. Syd Barrett, one of the members who brought us great joy with such wonderful albums, such as "Pipers at the Gates Of Dawn", has left us. He died today in his home, after years of seclusion from the world. His fellow band member, Roger Waters, wrote a song for The Wall, an album that Barrett did not have a chance to write, called "Goodbye Cruel World". This is appropriate for today.

"Goodbye cruel world,
I'm leaving you today.
Goodbye,
Goodbye,
Goodbye.

Goodbye, all you people,
There's nothing you can say
To make me change my mind.
Goodbye."

Syd Barrett, your wonderful lyrics and gifted guitar playing brought joy from the world. Rest in peace.

NOOOOO!!!1 This is a very sad day indeed. The amount of influence that man had could be equalled by very few, and that was even with such a shortened career. At least his mental pain and suffering has finally ceased. I wonder if he left any musical or artistic treasues behind? We'll miss you Syd!

This is a conspiracy theory board afterall so I thought I'd inject an actual hint of conspiracy theory into this news item.

Is there a chance this death might be in retaliation for ex-Pink Floyd frontman, Roger Waters's, recent activity in Israel a fortnight ago?

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters, who performed a one-off concert in Israel, called on the government to tear down its controversial separation barrier in the occupied West Bank.

"I believe we need this generation of Israelis to tear down the walls and make peace with their neighbours," the aging British rocker told the crowd of around 50,000 fans in the mixed Arab-Jewish town of Neveh Shalom.

The veteran musician enjoys a strong following in the region where Pink Floyd's 1979 hit Another Brick in the Wall has become an anthem of resistance to the separation barrier Israel is building across the West Bank.

Ex-Pink Floyd Frontman Demands Israel Tear Down 'Wall'

Sans Tin-foil-hat, this is a sad story. His music was brilliant and dare I say decades ahead of its time. The World is a poorer place now that he is no longer with us.

Perfect Lyrics for this forum Board:

Mother

Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they'll like this song?
Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Mother, should I build the wall?
Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Or is it just a waste of time?

In my Playlist right now....

So damned appropriate Souljah. Your post says it all. It says what we "feel" about the work that Pink Floyd gave us and it is so fitting for ATS. Thank you for remembering this poignant passage or lyric.

What a wonderfully appropriate tune for ATS. Maybe that can be the ATS anthem.

Syd Barrett (alias Rodger Barrett) was a hero of mine...not a child like one, but a real flesh and blood person whose talent I respected and admired. He influenced both my Music I make and My art that I make, the world is a smaller place without him. Although we take confort in the legacy that he leaves behind him that will continue to influence people and help them see thats thers not just one way of thinking. He didn't just think outside of the box.....to him there was no box in the first place.

Syd Barrett RIP - The Madcap laughs No More

Syd, you are not "Long Gone", and we will miss you. Your ousted candle sends smoke into the air, and trails behind your soul. In life, you were soft, quiet, catatonic at times. But the things you didn't say is what counts. The way you lived, was not the best, but we all could learn a lesson from you. To let your soul run free, and to never be drawn in to another person's thoughts. To not only thing out of the box, but to ignore it altogether. You lack of presence in this world has hurt us all. We hav e all lost a close firend to day. Shine on, Syd. Shine on.

Pink Floyd got me through High School. The Wall spoke to me, and helped me through some rough times. I know Syd was long gone from Floyd at that point, but no matter what anyone says Pink Floyd was Syd's band. Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Saucer were great.

Shine on you Crazy Diamond

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Lyrics

from CHAPTER 24 (Written by Syd Barrett)

All movement is accomplished in six stages,
and the seventh brings return
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one

Change return success
Going and coming without error
Action brings good fortune
Sunset

The time is with the month of winter solstice
When the change is due to come
Thunder in the Earth, the course of Heaven
Things cannot be destroyed once and for all

Even without Syd, though, the world will still go. The Show Must Go On. I just.. hope that the stupid rivalry between Gilmour and Waters dissolves so the world can once again feel the healing power of Pink Floyd. I don't think it'll happen. It makes me so upset, so upset I can't even say, to know that two men, separated by anger, when united, can create music to inspire the soul, to make the heart dance in its place. Music to not only make you sing, but to make you think as well. When I fisrt started to listen to Pink Floyd, I thought it was pretty cool. Then my friend told me to listen to the song. Not just listen, but listen. To hear, not only with the ears, but with the soul. to know the meaning behind these songs opened up my heart and my senses exploded. I could feel it all. And to hear a song made now, in my youth, like they were in yours, would hit so specially I would cry. But it won't it is something that will only exist in my dreams.

I remember seeing Pink Floyd doing Saucerful of Secrets a very long time ago, before Pink Floyd was big in this country. It blew me away!
The music was so different from everything else around at the time.

The following of this band and its genius spans several generation. Remarkable.
The kind of music that was anti-establishment then and now.

Syd will be missed.

Farewell Syd, you'll be greatly missed.

Bike

I've got a bike, you can ride if you like
it's got a basket, a bell that rings
and things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could
but I borrowed it
You're the kind of girl
that fits in with my world
I'll give you anything, everything
if you want thing
I've got a cloak, it's a bit of a joke
there's a tear up the front, it's red and black
I've had it for months
if you think it gould look good
then I guess it should
I know a mouse and he hasn't got a house
I don't know why I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse
I've got a clan of gingerbread men
here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men
take a couple if you wish, they're on the dish
I know a room of musical tunes
Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork
let's go into the other room and make them work

Check out "The Madcap Laughs" for Syd's solo work. R.I.P.
