Just to nitpick a bit, up until the moment that the U.S. grants these detainees some "lawful rights," they have none. Don't believe the hype; they
have no protection under Geneva, and they never did. The U.S. is going to extend rights to them that they never had before. The U.S. is going to
give them protection under Geneva even though Geneva specifically does not protect them. I wonder if any other countries will follow suit.
It's like a company giving maternity leave to women who aren't pregnant. the rules are designed for specific people and are written precisely to
showcase who those people are. This new protection, granted by the U.S. (not Geneva) is a rule that would have to be made specifically for those
people, as they aren't covered by any others.
I agree, by the by, that this is a good plan. I just wanted to nitpick for a moment.
