I would call this total commitment to ending the war in Iraq. Anybody here ever took part in a hunger strike? How long can one live without food?

Cindy Sheehan and Others to Launch White House Hunger Strike
Code Pink, Global Exchange and Gold Star Families for Peace have announced they will launch a hunger strike on July 4th outside the White House to protest the war in Iraq. Dozens of military family members, veterans, activists and celebrities have vowed to take part in the hunger strike. The list includes Cindy Sheehan, Dolores Huerta, Willie Nelson, Danny Glover, Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon. Cindy Sheehan said in a statement: “We’ve marched, held vigils, lobbied Congress, camped out at Bush’s ranch. We’ve even gone to jail. Now it’s time to do more.”

A long time, now if they went without water too, now that would get some attention quicker.

Yeah well I don't think there are too many of us here willing to go hungry for any reason, they have my admiration for being so committed.

Then again if they are celebrities they are probably used to going a few days without food.
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

It seems someone has taken a page out the IRA.

But, if they are going on a hunger strike outside the White House, surely police and doctors have access to them?

Sorry, but this seems like a PR stunt.

I'm very glad they're doing it- i dont know what they will accomplish with this.
In any case, glad to see people stand up again for what they believe.
As far as hunger, it will be hard for them...lets see how the White House handles this one

As far as i see it. ANY peaceful action that lobbies against ridiculous wars or oppression that gets the public eye is a good thing

Well they are asking for people to join them there in front of the white house or stage a hunger strike in their community or just volunteer to fast for the 4th of July or another day.

Here is the link, I think I will volunteer to go hungry on the 4th. I don't know what good it will do other than make me feel like I am at a least able to do something. But by signing up and joining them in this; the more people they can show that are backing them the more powerful the movement, so I guess I will be accomplishing something after all.

OMG, you mean I gotta feel sorry for a bunch of rich celeb's who ain't gonna eat for a day or two.....ROTFLMFAO!

I am not in particular a mean spirited man, matter a fact, a loving husband and father, but in this case....

I could care less if they don't eat for a month of Sundays.

p.s.

Betcha Willie Nelson caves in first!

AGENT T has a point but nobody will listen to them. Thousands of troops have died many with a lie between their heads. In England of a million marched against the war in Iraq; and it never did anything. Peaceful protest is like peaceful stress release nothing more; nothing less. Then again I have admiration for them and unlike marchers they don't go home when the sun goes down.
So I suppose it is a good way of drawing attention and of getting America to ask once again "what are we doing, what are we winning and what is it costing?".

That said if any drop dead I’m sure George Bush will personally bury them out the back (or maybe at the front as some sort of future deterrent).

But obviously it's a shame that starving yourself has become the only peaceful alternative to voting.

Calling a one day fast is a joke and does not qualify as a true hunger strike. My guess is they are using that term for a dramatic effect.

My guess is very few will not eat and those that claim they are on a hunger strike will catch a snack while others are not looking, and more then likely they will have a few beers/sodas with them rather than water which will turn it into a party rather than a protest as they claim. It is after all the 4th of July, perhaps many might be there only to get a good seat for the 4th of July fireworks

As for how long you can go without food some say several weeks, but going without water is a whole new story that is roughly 3-4 days.

How many people do you think will turn out for this on a holiday weekend? Very few would be my guess.

A hollywood hunger strike? You know what that means?

OK, I won't eat for 1 hour, then you take my place, and so on and so on. This could go on for years!

Big freaking deal!

No one is asking you to feel sorry for them, they are asking if you feel the same as they do to join them, and the fast is a hunger strike, and many will go hungry for more than a few days. The website link I listed is asking people to sign up to fast for a day or more, it's your choice.

Why you gotta pick on Willie, I betcha he will not cave in first.

Heres to hoping many more join them and they all starve

We all know nobody is going to starve. Its all symbolic. Its their right to do and they're going to do it.
If i knew of such a project here where i am, i'd join them too! I'd also make sure i ate a huge breakfast.
On second thought, i'd bring a snack and play it the right way. I dont have to lie- we get enough of that from this government.
Eat in plain view and protest. Why should my body be uncomfortable? For the government? I think not.

Friend, don't miss the humor in this situation, sheesh, Willy's alway's on my mind that's all, and a couple rich hollywooders fasting is like Bill Gate's giving away a free computer, like protesting global warming while you throw a couple logs on the fire, jump in your car, and go buy a new air conditioner for summer, don't make sense.

I say they put their money where their mouth is.....

I do see the humor but at the same time I see a lot of people standing up for what they believe, being anti-war is not exactly popular with many controlling the purse strings in this country, and so in this case stating their beliefs can actually cost them. Though I do agree they can stand to lose money a lot easier than most since they make millions.

"Always on my Mind", I see you are a Willie Nelson fan too.

To me this reminds me how out of touch with America Hollywood really is.

If they were really fighting for what America stands for, they would have a huge BBQ sponsored by Budwieser and Jack Daniels and hold their political rally that way. Instead, they hold a 'Hunger Strike' on a public sidewalk and publish advertisements about the rally in the NYTimes, an advertisement paid for and sponsored by the American Communist Party.

*Shakes Head*

What is American or Patriotic about not eating with friends and family on the 4th of July, inviting friends to partisipate, and accepting money to distribute flyers about the holiday bash by the American Communist party?

The answer is.. nothing. What a joke.

That is the problem with modern protestors imo, what ever happened to good old fashioned American liberal creativity? I remember clearly a giant poster my uncle had on his wall several years ago, he was leading an anti-war rally in Memphis protesting Vietnam on July 4th, holding a cold beer and a hotdog, dressed in his military fatiuges with an American flag draped over his back like a cape. Now that my friends, is how to lead a peace protest rally in America.

BUT NO.

Instead today, we have to rely on the creativity of the angry women in Code Pink and the famous master of creativity, Cindy Sheehan. Sorry, these are not exactly light bulbs of brillance, and people wonder why the US fights in Iraq. With opposition like that, the US could very well be at war forever.

I've fasted for 16 days for health benfits these clowns won't last through day 2. Funny thing is they'll spend more time and money promoting it then actually doing anything helpfull.

Its a pr stunt... Like getting marrried every other month.

Hollywood lmao the only ones who will be able to fast are the ones who puke up their meals so they can stay slim.

if a million people attended it wouldn't even be 1 % of the population of the country, but if a thousand people show up watch them make it out to be the entire country. Wait no sorry the voice of america... lmao sure it is...
