this is very unfortunate and i am dissapointed that so many people abused this helpful way of making points and ruined it for everyone else.

Will there be a possibility that tagging points may return?

Maybe it would be a good idea to limit the number of tags per day. This way people can still make points but must think wisely about how they tag and not just put any old thing down that will give them a few points. Tagging was originally created to help ATS become more organized not just a way to get points, it works both ways.

At the bottom of the page of every thread there is a white box. You enter a word there that has relation to the particular thread. It's sorta an indexing system (or a search system) depending on how you look at it. You used to get points for adding a tag.

(So we're back to how it used to be. Earning your points the hard way...
)

You can read all about it in the ATS 101 section i think. Anyway it "was" a helpful way of categorizing threads by labeling them while also giving you a certain amount of points. People abused this by putting random things in there that didnt have to do with the topic at all, therefore the points system has been revoked as of june 20th 2006.

Tag Team

What's kind of cool is that this thread already has a few tags on it.

The tagging system has Not been disabled. It will continue to serve as a means to necessitate and expidite searching for relevant topics and your points of interest.

It "was", also, a means by which to attain user points for relevant tagging throughout the ATS Community. However, due to recent, and ongoing, abuse of said points rewards, that feature has now been disabled.

In the end, appropriate and relevant tagging of ATS threads will only enhance our abilty to readily access that which we are seeking.

If your true desires are to Contribute to and make this a better Community ...

Well, then, Tag On !

Now that's really sad. I've made a lot of points through tagging. Geez, sure hope I wasn't one of the ones messing it up.

I wasn't just after the points, although they were nice to get...this is/was a great way to find older threads that might not have been seen otherwise.

Yes, I would like to continue tagging, even if it is now pointless (pun intended), but if you wouldn't mind, could you send me a u2u so that I know whether I need to change how I was tagging?
Thanks

I think I hold the tagging record at this point with over 15,000 tags added to the system.
And I really hope this will turn into a good search engine that can cross reference all the threads in the ATS environs.

The points were a great way to get members inspired to do some tagging, but I also saw so many tags that were just useless.

(I'd love to have editing power over tags for a while, just to do some cleaning...)
A little OCD on my part...

SkepticOverlord had said he was looking for 25% of the threads to be tagged to implement a search feature, and as of today:

There are a total of 162435 total tags on 75749 board threads.
36.1% of all ATS threads are tagged by members.

Points or not, I hope something comes of this.
And until told otherwise, I'll keep tagging..............

I ranted about "editorializing" with tags a while back.
Is that what was happening? Or just random crap?

I'll admit to wanting to type YOU"RE IT, a few times.
Never did it though.

I agree with you ShadowEyes, I tried not to tag threads aimlessly for points,( if i could not think of something good to put i just usually skipped over it) however i might have made a mistake but i really hope not.

As for your point about finding really old threads, I totally agree! Old threads sometimes get lost in time and are overtaken by current events, many of these interesting threads arnt even fully answered or addressed before they die and fade away into the past. I personally feel that taking away the point system, although it does separate the true hard-core ATS fans who tag only to further the indexing of threads, I do feel it does give more insentive to do so, and also leads to the exploration of threads that might not have been seen before.

Again, it is my opinion that the points system which was related to tagging should have been restricted in a different way, like limiting the amounts of taggings in one day which award you points. It just seems kinda harsh thats all.

Not a bad idea, tagging limits.
20-30 points a day max, for tags.
Possible?

I think it is a good idea also. If this change were made it would obviously put a limit on abuse and also give an aditional reward for helping ATS. "However" the implemantation of this change would have to be made quite accessable (mod posting a locked thread) in order to work. This would be an advantage in terms of keeping more people happy, while also taking away the reason for spam tagging for points.

make sense?

Oh yes, there are many great old threads buried in there. And I have been guilty on occasion of bringing them back to life, just to give them another chance to be discussed.

I think I'm going to follow anxietydisorder's lead, and keep tagging until I'm told otherwise.

And you are one of the Main abusers. One of the main people to get it taken away for all.

Can you give an example of what was considered 'abuse'? Was it the shear number of tags or was it the way he was tagging?
