Madeira Isle strange mtn. top bunker and other images

Well Google earth has this whole island covered. Its located SW of Spain and West of Africa. I found a mountain top subterrainian bunker/base entrance which looks used and guarded/secreted. Also just to the east in the cove I came across a few strange water structures.
Any info on this place would be very helpfull. Thanks

Also the Isle just to the North is also high res imaged by Google and I swear there is a huge contrail that looks very much like the knots on a rope exaust as talked about here on the Aurora and other X craft. God I love Sat. imagery

Bored at work and Google earth at my disposal.

Well the image seems to be a bunker or installation or subterrainian entrance to me. But could be anything at this point.

Perhaps a mine? If that circle is a cone extending downwards? I dunno, really neat though!

I was more interested in the picture of the underwater triangle of points...
with the 4 USO's heading to it underwater...

Probably a fish farm, or research project, but it looks wild...

"is this the island of portugal" really means IMHO " is this the island BELONGING to portugal "

to which the answer is yes -- madiera is an autonomy dependanct of portugal


as for what the indicated area is -- it is a volcanic crater

zoom in on :

32 44 49 45 N

16 42 20 05 W

and trace the peninsular back west -- 3 more craters are clearly visible

some research will be needed -- but IMHO the circile atop the crater is a memorial or statue to something [ its 12m diameter -- measured by google ] -- probally a statue with a circular wall around it -- or some such

points that stand out are -- its got no road access - the road terminated some way down the slope

the peak is 600m from a marina -- with presumably clear LOS -- so its hardly hidden or secret .

and how you conclude it is guarded / used from a google earth scan escapes me

PS -- enable GE " terrain " feature and use tilt to observe the hill from an oblique angle -- it doesnt make the feature on top any clearer -- but you get a perfect grasp of the topography

I don't know if anyone has thought of this, might not be much, but doesn't that runway seem a little long for such a small island?

Okay well I conclude this structure is guarded because there is one way in. The road leads nowhere else. When you get within view of the area you can clearly see two gated areas which you must pass to get to it. See new close up pic. Clearly you can see a fence out line around the whole structure as well as a guard shack before final entry. And upon further study the Bunker does in fact look like a entrance. You can see the angle of the structure and see the road ends at the entrance. No actual place to turn around. Why would something like a mine be at the tip top of a mtn? And why is it so off limits. I again believe this to be an entrance to something and the road leading in is hard to dispute. Google Earth the area yourself. Closer study shows greater detail.

I know unlikely, but still why would any government have thier secret bases revealed on Google Earth?

It seems (to me) that it is highly unlikely that this would be anything sinister, but then again, Area51 is shown in all its glory.

I'm pretty certain that the circular thing on top of the mountain is a VOR-DME antenna. This particular VOR antenna (FUN) is interesting because it is used in the approach to Madeira Airport (LPMA / FNC). Which just so happens to be one of the most difficult airport approaches in the world due to its high cliffs and wind gusts.

hello geezers of course i know what portugal looks like, i meant the above saying as an island of the coast of portugal. man do we have to explain thoroughly everything we write. do you people just not use your common sense and understand what i would have meant by the above sentence.

EXACTLY what i thought when i first saw it. Very interesting find. I'm more interested in the contrail than the supposed base. Look at the trail its just going South towards Antarctica if it doesn't turn, not heading towards and islands or anything apart from Antarctica.

i asked my pal 'leo' who is from the island, hes going to check with his pops who still lives there but he seems to think its a a comunications antena site for the local mobile network, he reckons hes never seen anything suspicious out there.

Optimus great we can get a confirmation and put that mtn. top structure to fact. Thanks for the input and post his reply please. Also ask about the tower structure in the water in the link below if possible. Thanks

Liamoville. I have added a couple of close ups of the contrail. It certainly is very high up as well I believe. Im sure the Atlantic is a great place to overfly for an X craft as there is much less chance of being spotted. Maybe this should be another topic in Aircraft projects as well.

It does look faifly high altitude because you can actually see it clearly. Maybe you could try to follow the line of the contrail ? North and South ? See if you can find where it started or ended. Hard task though.

which imho shows prety clearly an absence of shadows on the plateau and arround the aledged bunker

whereas the building , terrain drop offs and the " post " -- i dont know what it is -- all cast distinct shadows

there is one caveat however -- the building is on a reverse slope , as is the post which will enhance and elongate shadow .

but objects on the forward slope near the marina cast dostinct shadow too -- so the lack of ANY visible shadow on the plateau indicates to me that it is a quite flat feature

IMHO -- not a comms / navigation antenna

other points :

air strip size -- madiera is a quite popular tourist destination , the runway lengh is determined by the airliners that are required to use it -- thus to make air travel to the island affordable and attractive -- they must service the type of jets used by holiday charter companies

the " structure " out to sea -- wow , sharp eyes -- that was well spotted

did you check out the 4 circular structures just to the NW of youir find -- they look loke some knind of fish farming pens ??
