A 15-year-old boy is seriously ill in hospital in Manchester after he was shot five times by a masked gunman.
His 13-year-old friend was also wounded when the man got out of a car and opened fire on a group of youngsters.
The attack took place in the Ardwick Green area of the city, just before midnight on Saturday. Police were alerted by an ambulance crew.
The older boy was wounded in his chest, back, groin, buttock and thigh. The 13-year-old was hit once in the leg.
Supt Gerry McGowan said the children had been playing out on the street when a silver car drove up to them and the masked man got out.
