I used to work at Target back when it used to be in Brisbane City next to David Jones in the Mall. I worked on the top floor, in the
storage/excess/warehouse section. The building was extremely old (I think it was even heritage listed, since when they tore it down they had to keep
the facade of the building) and widely reputed to be haunted. I personally experienced a number of odd happenings and sightings there, as did my
fellow workers. To reflect on a few:
One day I was putting excess stock away when I saw a man at the other end of the enormous corridor which served as our storage area (it ran almost the
entire length of the building with huge shelves on each side for storing excess stock). Now, it occassionally happened that customers would find their
way upstairs off the sales floor by accident, and I was told that we once had an industrial spy prowling around up there so, whilst I was surprised to
see someone there (since nobody worked on that floor except me), I assumed there was a natural explanation. I called out to the guy, asking him what
he was doing up there. He stared at me and, without saying anything, walked down one of the aisles created by the shelves, out of my sight. I walked
down to the aisle, only to find nobody there. The corridor ended at a dead-end there, and since there was no way anybody could have gotten past me, I
was extremely surprised to see an empty aisle. The guy had literally disappeared.
Often, casual warehouse employees would come up to me - always sheepishly - and ask me if I noticed people out of the corner of my eye whilst working
alone up in the storage area. I assured them that they weren't crazy and it eventually became an in-joke amongst the warehouse staff, since none of
the regular sales staff believed us.
Another incident, which probably had a rational explanation, invloved a voice recorder. Me and one of the other warehouse guys, a casual, were bored
out of our minds one night and started playing with the toys in the storage area. He found a simple voice recorder which would record your voice and
play it back to you. We fooled around with it for a while, speaking insults and childish taunts and laughing hysterically as they were played back in
a hilarious tinny voice. But then, my mate recorded himself making a joke and when he played it back, we both heard a woman screaming and crying. He
refused to work in the storage area after that, even though we tried to convince him it was probably just a fault in the recorder.
That building was a weird place. The windows at the Adelaide Street end were painted over, with little scratches in them. I mentioned this to the boss
one day and he told me that the building across the road had once been an illegal brothel. The police used that floor of the building to spy (through
the cracks) on the clientele. The building was ancient and there were long passage-ways which led nowhere and doors which opened onto brick walls.
One day, after many months of having worked there, we found a hidden bathroom behind some shelves. It was pitch black inside and enormous, with rows
of showers an toilet stalls. We then took great joy in locking new staff in the "mystery room" as initiation. Many of the sales staff who had worked
in the building for years had no idea the room existed, or that it was so enormous.
So there you are. Brisbane has many old buildings and I'm not surprised at all to hear of localised "hauntings". If you doubt the truth of my
statements regarding the man I saw who vanished, or anything else, feel free to check out my previous posts. You will see that I go to great lengths
to verify my statements and I never lie.
