I was in college at Richmond, Ky, in 1956. I drove over to the UK - University of Kentucky - at Lexington to attend a lecture given by Alistair Cooke. He was the “foreign” correspondent for the Manchester Guardian. Because he was so impressive about his knowledge of America and the world, I subscribed to the weekly air edition - printed on India paper - of the Manchester Guardian for many years. Cooke was a man of both insightful perception and great writing skills. It was somewhat ironic that I could get “better” news about America 2 weeks after the fact from a foreign newspaper! Though I’ve never been to England, I do feel a certain closeness to Manchester. I note the Guardian has dropped the ‘Manchester’ from its letterhead.
