A spokeswoman for Katie Holmes has given The Wall Street Journal a comment on why she won't be returning as Rachel Dawes in the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight.
"We never got to the negotiating stage" for the film, said Julie Polkes, Holmes' representative. "Katie was offered ["Dark Knight"] but was unable to accept the role because of scheduling conflicts. She was in the process of negotiating for another project.
Instead, Holmes will star in "Mad Money" with Queen Latifah which starts shooting in a couple of months with a budget of only $12 million.

Katie Holmes will no longer play Rachel Dawes, though the character remains.

The rumor mill strongly suggests that the replacement will be Canadian actress Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, The Wedding Crashers). McAdams was rumored for the role a few months back, but now Batman-on-Film.com reports that her name has resurfaced once again.
The role of Rachel in the sequel, according to DarkHorizons.com, "will be very small, amounting to a few scenes at most."

Variety adds that, in addition to Christian Bale and Michael Caine, Gary Oldman is also "locked" to return for the sequel to Batman Begins. There's no word yet on whether Morgan Freeman will be back as Lucius Fox.

Aaron Eckhart has been confirmed as being in "final negotiations" to play Harvey Dent in the upcoming The Dark Knight. District Attorney Harvey Dent begins as an ally of Batman and Gotham cop Jim Gordon, only to end up becoming the horrifically scarred, coin-flipping villain Two-Face.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Eckhart's casting today. There's still no word on whether Maggie Gyllenhaal has indeed replaced Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes.
In addition to Eckhart, The Dark Knight also stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman. Heath Ledger will play The Joker.

i still think that heath ledger as the joker is a bad idea, he doesnt seem like the type of guy who could act as a guy that was a comedian gone crazy.
but i do know who would be perfect for that, denis leary. he is a comedian, and he can be a crazy killer too, plus he has the perfect voice.

After weeks of Web buzz, Maggie Gyllenhaal (World Trade Center, Stranger Than Fiction) has been confirmed as Katie Holmes' replacement in The Dark Knight, the sequel to 2005's Batman Begins.
Gyllenhaal succeeds Holmes in the role of Rachel Dawes, Bruce Wayne's childhood sweetheart and a Gotham City assistant district attorney.

Cillian Murphy talked to ComingSoon.net and did not confirm or deny that his Batman Begins character, Scarecrow, might be back for The Dark Knight.
And for those still wondering whether Murphy might return as Dr, Jonathan Crane AKA The Scarecorew in Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel The Dark Knight, the actor still is hesitant to talk about it. "I'm not at liberty and it's not my place to say," he repeated from other recent interviews. "I'd love to work with Chris again. I enjoyed tremendously working on that film, and we'll see. I think casting Heath Ledger as the Joker is fantastic casting. He'll make an amazing movie."

No, Jorge Garcia won't be starring as Clayface in THE DARK KNIGHT but another cast member of "Lost" will join the new Batman film. Nestor Carbonell, now playing the mysterious Richard Alpert on the hit ABC show, has signed on to play the mayor of Gotham City in KNIGHT. I'd love to talk more about Carbonell and how he, and his character, are part of what has made this season of "Lost" so exciting but everytime I post something about the show, I get a million "dude you ruined it for me!!" e-mails. I recently posted about how Ian Somerholder was a former star of "Lost" and someone bitched me out for it. That was three years ago!! The spoiler statute of limitations has to be at least one year. Beyond that, you're on your own. Carbonell also has a series "Cane" that was just picked up by CBS for its fall schedule. Filming on KNIGHT is currently underway in Chicago.

Are there any definite confirmations about which Rogue's Gallery villains will be in Dark Knight (aside from the Joker)?

I'm a little bummed about Maggie Gyllenhaal taking Katie Holmes's place!! Granted Katie is not a great actress, but at least she is pretty. I don't find Maggie Gyllenhaal attractive at all. I would rather see Bruce with a pretty girl than an average looking girl!!! Can't wait for the movie an or trailers
