I was briefly remembering an old New Scientist article that I read. It talked about a promising cure for cancer from the extract of the absinthe plant, called artisinemen. It was used in a study by two blokes from the Uni of Washington, who saw the plant as a "safe non-toxin" It can also be used to treat malaria and other diseases.
Has anybody heard of this? I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't. Since the actual chemical is actually very inexpensive, there is no profit in it. So pharmaseutical folk aren't interested.
Here's a useful site that I found on the plant. I've been trying to find the actual study, but to no avail. I'm still looking, so fingers crossed I may get lucky.
