The raindrops that began falling this afternoon claimed the day as the 21st rainy one this month. With rain expected through Wednesday and again on Friday, the last day of March, the city may well beat its record of 23 rainy days recorded in March 1904, forecaster Bob Benjamin said.

Kahala Mall closed and evacuated shortly before 1 pm because of ankle-deep water in the shopping center. Water also cascaded down stairways into the mall's warehouse, one floor down from the ground level. Store clerks barely had time to move their merchandise to higher ground.
Major flooding was reported in Makiki, where residents in some neighborhoods had to be evacuated because of floodwaters. Makiki Stream overflowed near Fern Street at about 12:30 pm, with water three to four feet deep at Moku Place. The stream's rapids funneled into the narrow drainage channel on Kalakaua Avenue, sending torpedoes of lumber, driftwood and garbage slamming into three connecting walkways over the stream before spilling over the embankment at Philip Street. Shopkeepers along Kalakaua closed their doors as police closed off the avenue between King and Kanunu Streets.
Traffic headed downtown slowed to a crawl along Moanalua Freeway just before the Middle Street merge after the Moanalua Stream overflowed, sending several feet of water on the freeway. Traffic was funneled down to a single lane near the median, and police closed the on-ramp from Fort Shafter, detouring traffic onto King Street in Kalihi.
Roundtop Drive, which already had been the scene of several mudslides, saw several major slides Friday. Cars were buried under one slide, which also undermined the roadway
