jra, to locate our new landing sites near the "south pole" of the Moon on the daytime terminator (just over the line into the "far side") is what
the NASA handout said, and it seemed to be for the purpose of finding more available water-ice stuck in shadow-craters; of course we know, the
valuable Helium-3 will be concentrated on the sides ( or "quadrants") that face the sun the most.
I do not think protection from solar radiation was a factor in NASA's decision to locate our landing sites in this harder-to-access area...a few
meters of lunar regolith provide all the protection needed, on the sunny side notwithstanding.
Just another boondoggle to 1) keep handing out the money and 2) to keep NASA fatcat bureaucrats in a job for another 20 years without actually
accomplishing the mission.
