And what if you get a case of "stolen mortar"?

You are way too clever for your own good.

Worse, I really tried to find a picture of Montresor showing Fortunado the trowel he had hidden in his coat and saying "Why, yes, I AM a mason", meaning he was going to brick Fortunado into the niche. But, alas, I couldn't find one.

"How do you tell if someone is a mason?"

If their first name is Perry and they are a lawyer. . . . . .

I remember when we had to read that in high school, I hit the floor laughing. No one got it. I guess you had to grow up in a Masonic family and have an awful sense of humor.

He laughed and threw the bottle upwards with a gesticulation I did not understand.

I looked at him in surprise. He repeated the movement --a grotesque one.

"You do not comprehend?" he said.

"Not I," I replied.

"Then you are not of the brotherhood."

"How?"

"You are not of the masons."

"Yes, yes," I said; "yes, yes."

"You? Impossible! A mason?"

"A mason," I replied.

"A sign," he said, "a sign."

"It is this," I answered, producing from beneath the folds of my roquelaire a trowel.

See? If you just ask random people if they're a mason, you end up in a wall. Be Warned.

Poe certainly nailed it with that exchange. I think we need to enhance the Working Tools lecture for the Master Mason Degree.

I always fantasized about being on Wheel of Fortune and when they asked me to solve the problem, it would go something like...

"Will you solve the puzzle?"

"Nay! You give me!"

"I will not!"

"Will you spell it, or halve it?"

etc.

So I'm not a Mason, But I would love to be one...

Is it true that some Masons believe that they are the descendants of Cain?

And although the front of Masonry/ The porch I've heard it called/ Is friendly and charitable and all that jazz but once you get deep enough or say the correct things in ritual you will be seperated...

"Leave the trace of the evil within, can you dig it?"

I also have read a bit of Albert Pikes writings and therre is a bunch of phallus worship in there that was utterly laughable..
Like LOL, what kind of loser worships cock...

So can I join?

I have heard you must not only be wise but also be able to make money... I don't feel like any true godly organization would turn away the poor... So yeah XD

Most Grand Lodges have a Lodge locator, so you can find some Lodges near you to visit.

No, we don't believe we're descendants of Cain.

Our charities are not a front nor is there phallus worship.

You need to be able to pay your annual dues.

Uhmmm the 1st Masonic name you were given?? If you were greeted by a Brother on the Square and he "spoke"to you....based on what you wrote he would "cover" your light and ask you to remove it. Please get into your books and remember the 1st name you were given until you can defend your "Light".

In what jurisdiction or appendant body is a "Masonic name" given? A candidate is not given any name or title in the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Texas in any of the three degrees conferred. However most of the super-secret words and pass-words are names of individuals identified in the Old Testament/Torah.

As for the OP posting over a decade ago... Most Masons now days are very open about their membership, most lodges in the free world are becoming more public in their actions and activities. In the younger generations jewelry, clothing and tattoos are the most obvious indicators, however "Stolen Mortar" has become rampant. A true Freemason is best identified not by what is visible in what they wear or what they drive... It is by a mans actions, reactions and virtues which distinguish a Master Mason from the profane. The Entered Apprentice degree proficiency explains what it means to be a true Freemason. In the Fellowcraft degree loyalty to the fraternity is outlined, and the Masters Degree finalizes the instruction of which the concept of what Freemasonry is in its entirety. A brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of the Great Architect of the Universe.

Without being a Mason yourself it's practically impossible to determine if someone is a Regular Mason, a clandestine, or just an imposter.
2 B 1 Ask One. We Masons have protocol to verify if one is a true Mason or not.
