About civilization, Martin Luther King wrote “We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing-oriented" society to a "person-oriented" society.
When machines and computers; profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism,
and militarism are incapable of being conquered.” The depth of meaning many of his writings maintain even now often stuns me into a sense of
continuing to try to grasp what we are trying to do here.
Take the lovely and innocent Jill Carroll for example, the kidnapped AMERICAN Christian Science Monitor freelance journalist whose deadline for
payment has come and gone.
www.firstcoastnews.com...
Will her fate be the same as the dozens of other murdered innocents who through no fault of their own were beheaded by our enemy? Can you imagine
such a facility for achieving such tasks? A tactical war room with bloodstained walls long since abandoning all hope of civilization and its purpose
and meanings.
Besides the obvious danger of an inevitable nuclear Middle East with the big boy bombs in the hands of the likes of Zarquai and Bin Laden. There is
also the subtler requirement of forcing interaction lest we be overrun by madness; to wit, the riots in France last year, or the even more pointless
aspect of the gassing of the Kurds in northern Iraq.
To quote another author, Howard Winters, “Civilization is the process in which one gradually increases the number of people included in the term
'we' or 'us' and at the same time decreases those labeled 'you' or 'them' until that category has no one left in it.” I guess he forgot to
mention the bloody part.
If our lives are at risk and they are or will be if we do not act continuously and rigorously on this problem, then what other choices do we have?
There is an answer to that question, and it will unfold in failure.
