I would really love to understand how anyone here could think a two term president of whatever political bent could get away with taking dictatorial control of the country by arbitraily abolishing the 22nd amendment to the constitution.

I would rather we didn't have to consider it.

Remember that the military all take oaths that require them to protect (I am paraphrasing here, so bear with me) and defend the constitution, and country against ALL enemies foriegn and domestic. A president doing this would immeadiately qualify as such. All the military personel that I know, both current and past would never, ever stand for it. They would be well within their rights to refuse any orders originating from such a would be despot.

Ah, but what if the constitution were changed, i.e. the Patriot Act, and the proposed Patriot Act II?

Soldiers are first and foremost citizens of this country. The guardians of freedom, etc..., not robots who are answerable to their programming.

This is true, they are first and foremost citizens of this country, and second
most robots who are answerable to their programming. Excuse me but
have you ever seen, or heard what boot camp is like, and subsequent
military duty. Do not question your superior officers!
Also, have you seen, or heard of how smart the average grunt is in the
military?
Also, have you seen, or heard of what happens to the intelligent officers
who disobey commands from the top? Words like court martial, enemy
combatant, and execution come to mind.

Not to mention what the civilian response would be, myself amongst them.
Large scale protest to dwarf anything during the Vietnam War.

This is great! Except for the concept that the Patriot Act II brings into play,
in which you may be considered a terrorist for protesting, and stripped of
your citizenship, and tried as a no citizenship having schlub... then
executed. Heil Bush!

Now for the bust, how can you say when Mr. Bush will leave office until he does? Easier to do it after the fact, than before it in case something untoward happens.

This is true. You get 1 point out of 5.
Count Zero how very insulting and condescending of you. I'm a robot now? Just so you know I went to Boot Camp where I was taught to think for myself and to recognize legal and illegal orders. When a military member follows an order they know to be illegal they are held responsible when they refuse to follow an order that is illegal there are no penalties to be paid. Are you aware of that, evidently not. There is no way the US military would ever allow themselves to be part of the destruction of the Constition. The exact quote and I remember it as tho I said it yesterday is" To protect and defend the Constition of the United States of America, against all enenmies foriegn or domestic." I believed it then and I believe it now. Were President Bush to try such a stupid move he wouldn't be in office long. Count Zero it is obvious to me that you do not know any American military personnel or you would not disrespect those brave men and women as you did. Frankly you owe all military past and present members a humble apology.

The military personnel you know are in the minority. Most will do as they're told. A minority group may try to make a difference, and they will fail.

The most logical conclusion about the picture is that it was made during Bush Jr's FIRST term, and the creator did not know whether to put 2001-2004 or 2001-2008 because the prez could have gotten a second term.

considering congress just emasculated the prez over the ports issue, I hope this idea is dead on e and for all. He is barley president right now ! If he vetoes the port legislation, and it is overturned, his presidency is officially over

All I have to say is if Bush is smart enough and powerful enough to become president forever more power to him. He would have played the system and won. If the people are too weak to do anything to him. If he does and becomes dictator or whatever I'll be the first in line to join his secret police because let's face it the old cliche will ring true: if you can't beat 'em join 'em

On a serious note I cannot see GW wanting to be forever president, I agree in Jan/2009 he will step down and I am sure deep down he will be happy about it

Have you seen the health/dental benefit plans for fullt-time secret police employees? You can't beat 'em!

Bush as our president FOREVER?

We could only hope!

Show me someone else that will take the terrorism battle to the enemy.

Clinton, didn't
Cheney, no
Gore, don't get me started
Fiengold, no
Kerry, what a joke

It is sad but true that come the next election our beloved GWB will not be able to run again. ( The entire world needs to pay special attention to this special man and learn a thing or two )

The only hope we have of continuing our reign of power and military superiority is that we elect Jeb Bush and let his big brother and George SR run things from behind the scenes.

Oh what a glorious time that will be for us all, as a nation and a world!

You mean by handing them a new country (Iraq) on a silver platter? The Bush administration is the greatest thing to happen to terrorism in the history of the world. The administration has almost single-handedly gave them an entirely new base for operations, as well as providing incentive for thousands more to join the terrorist ranks.

A picture of this is worth a thousand words.

Either he will be forever (as in dictator) OR he will be the last president because he's managed to screw up this world and even if he leaves the White House, who do you think can clean this mess up???????

Besides, he wants to bring on the apocalypse. His chances of being the last is good.

barring some massive mind control is it really plausible to think that the american public would tolerate him as president for life? it seems more reasonable that someone else would take over the office as a puppet.

CyberSEAL.

For your edificaion:
At present I know right around 60 past or present military personel, not to mention at least a dozen future. I venture to guess that they represent a valid cross section of the American military, all branches.

Not one single member of this group, NOT ONE, would go along with such idiocy.

Oh, I suppose that one could find some that would, after all megalomania does exist. But the majority of the American military? Not a chance in Hell!

Mr. Would-be Despot would find himself awfully lonely in very short order. All these "mindless robots", as they have been characterized by some on this very thread, have taken an oath to protect and defend the country and its constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. The concept of honor is not alien to these people.

All throughout our nations history, young men and women have taken this oath, and have given their blood, sweat, and in all too many cases, their last breath, so people like you and others herein can disrespect their sacrifice and honor.

To even hint that a majority would go along with tearing the soul out of our nation, is to denigrate their honor and past, present, and future sacrifices.

So in closing. No they are not in the minority, they are a representation of the majority.

No, Cyberseal any military personnel you know who would help tear down the constitution are the minority. After serving in the military for 10 years active and 3 reserve I dare say I can speak with some authority that the vast majority would never follow a despot. Seagull speaks the truth when he says many young men and women have willingly given their last breath to preserve your freedom to defame their sacrifices and memories by making statements like this.

I think if Hilary can become president that the Clintons will be dictators for life. They can use Hilary or Bill or Chelsea even to sit in the white house. I'm sure that many democrats like that idea. Wonder what happened with that thing about Bill wanting to run again and overriding the two term limit rule? Anybody know if the dems are still pushing that idea so they can control the white house longer?
