Having just downloaded Google Earth and had great fun wasting the best part of 2 hours zooming in on friend's houses,
I started to wonder how I could find out the imaging-satellite trajectories and orbit times
so I can haul a huge banner across my roof with a message/artwork?

Google Earth is not "live." Some photos on Google Earth are as old as 3 years.

Common questions about Google Earth

1. When were these pictures taken? How often are they updated?

Our images are photographs taken by satellites and aircraft sometime in the last three years. The images in Google Earth are updated on a rolling basis. Click here for more details.

That doesn't mean that your area photos are three years old. You might be able to make your mark on Google Earth. I know that some businesses are painting their roofs for "free advertisement" on Google Earth.
