A fully-loaded oil tanker broke away from its moorings and ran aground in silt in Alaska. It appears no oil is leaking from the ship at the moment:

FOX News

NIKISKI, Alaska — A fully-loaded tanker broke free of the dock in Nikiski and ran aground, the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday.

The 575-foot Seabulk Pride was moored in Nikiski on the Kenai Peninsula overnight when it broke free of the dock, said Petty Officer Steve Harrison with the Coast Guard's command center in Juneau.

Harrison said the Coast Guard received the report at about 6 a.m. It was not immediately known how long the tanker drifted before running aground. Tugs were on the way to the scene to rescue the ship, he said.

Hopefully there is no damage and the tugboats can simply rescue the ship. I'd hate for another Exxon Valdez type disaster to occur there!

Perhaps the reason there is no oil spill is because this might be a double hulled ship, hopefully it is. The Exxon Valdez incident should never happen again.

Good point

It looks like she is double-hulled:

Single screw diesel, crude oil/ MTBE/ petroleum product carrier, double hull/ bottom, S.B.T. and C.O.W. The 7 pairs of cargo tanks (14 total) and slop tanks (2) are seperated by a centerline corrugated bulkhead. Cargo tank capacity 100% full 55,490 m3 and 98% full 54,381 m3. All cargo tanks a lines 150 mm (6”) and larger are pure epoxy coated. Ballast tanks, epoxy coated.
Accomodations for 28 persons plus 6 Suez Canal crew.

Technology saves the day

Who says humankind doesn't learn from it's mistakes. By 2015, every tanker is US waters needs to be double hulled, and this is as textbook an example of the need for this tech that you could ask for.....

....It's Almost....

TOO PERFECT!!

Did Exxon get so much money they just decided to start crashing Tankers for the heck of it?

"How much money we have from the War in Iraq this quarter? hmm...yeah, sure, what the hell, lets crash something, it'll be fun!"

Funny, 2 days ago on the Daily Show, Jon Stewart made a crack that since Exxon made so much money, they were gonna start crashing ships into the Alaskan coast again.. for fun..
