Exactly correct! Under a true Democracy nobody is propped up. The Palestinians are going to have to perceive that Hamas is doing what they were put in power to do. The question I have is: What were they put in power to do? If they were put in power to improve the social infrastructure--I think they're likely to fail. If they were put in power to continue attacking Israelis with homicide bombers--then they are likely to succeed. That is; until Israel squashes them now that they are the official Palestinian government.

Hamas winning is a double edged sword, on the one hand the realities and trappings of power may bring some reality into their politics and pave the way for peace.

On the other Hamas could remain an extremist organisation, find itself cut off from the aid that Fatah recieved from the US and EU, watch what little economic activity there is in the Gaza strip and W. Bank crumble, leaving them with a horde of pissed of Palestinians with nothing better to do than take pot shots at Israel. Who then go ballistic, annexe more land, and the cycle continues...

The problem is that Hamas' charter includes the elimination of Israel. The fact that Palestinians voted in Hamas is indicative that this is their desire as well. I think peace over there is a "pipe dream."

While Hamas's charter calls for Israels annihilation, their manifesto contained no such rhetoric, and there are some rumblings of an acceptance of Israel in exchange for a return to the 1967 borders.

This is after less than a week of power.

I feel sorry for any peoples' or nations that go againsts the JEWS and Israel. History has shown their destruction and yet they still exist. Why can't the Egyptians let them in or the Iranians they have plenty of land. The reason is that the Arabs want it all after the Jews who made Israel from swamp lands that no one cared about into something prospered, the Muslims wanted it back. The land was paid for by the Jews also.

the nation of israel is made from land taken by turkey after world war 1. under turkey palestine was actually doing pretty damn good.

the only reason israel is doing so damn well is because the jewish people settling it have plenty of money already, and they got all their land by kicking the palestinians out.

the jews never paid for the land, they committed acts of terrorism against the british until the british decided to give in (mostly because of the holocaust). they got the land for free, they got the nation for free, and they recieved an enourmous amount of help to found their nation. israel was allowed to discriminate and expel palestinians, while the world looked the other way.

bottom line, palestinians got a raw deal.
