Hmmm....interesting.
What better way to make people believe that NASA knows nothing of ET life, then to have a credible official join a research team. He will be able to get the inside scoop on how far they get, or what they discover.
Or maybe, NASA knows nothing of ET life, and he's just interested in pursuing the possibility of alien existance. If this is the case, then it may suggest that he has reason to believe that life exists outside our planet.
These are only thoughts that popped into my head when reading this.
