IRAN is working on a secret nuclear programme for military purposes despite its promise to halt all uranium enrichment activities, a German news magazine claimed yesterday.

Citing documents from an unnamed intelligence agency, Der Spiegel said Iran had set up a laboratory in a secret tunnel near a nuclear facility in Isfahan. This would be able to produce large amounts of uranium hexafluoride gas which could, in turn, be used to enrich uranium — a vital component for a nuclear bomb.

Orders to build the tunnel were given last month by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, the magazine said.

Iran plans secret 'nuclear university' to train scientists

The Iranian government has given approval for the establishment of a secret nuclear research centre to train its scientists in all aspects of atomic technology, The Telegraph can reveal.

Recent reports received by Western intelligence show that Teheran has recently approved the establishment of a faculty of applied nuclear engineering that will be attached to the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI).

They didn't need an agreement to resume enriching uranium. They voluntarily stopped in the first place.

The NPT also demands that we reduce numbers of nuclear weapons, we haven't done that have we?

I'm not trying to promote Iran's actions, I just want to point out that they aren't doing anything we ourselves haven't done or wouldn't do in the same situation. Remember, they've had hostile forces on their borders for decades - Saddam's Iraq, and now the US occupied Afghanistan and Iraq on two sides, and the sabers are rattling every day. We're not blameless in this situation.

I don't think Iran should be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, but I think it should be left to the Israeli's to take out Iran's labs and reactors. It's Israel that can justify the threat, they have the ability, and it's in their own best interest to act alone. US involvement would turn the middle east against us..

it sets no date, it doesnt say "you have to disarm".

Declaring their intention to achieve at the earliest possible date the cessation of the nuclear arms race and to undertake effective measures in the direction of nuclear disarmament,

how are we to blame? how does iraq or afghanistan constitute reason for iran violating the npt? they violated it even before either war.

iran signed the npt, forfeighting any right to nuclear weapons, they agreed toaccept these limitations period.

And Russia has not reduced the numbers of their nuclear weapons either, despite all the aid that has been sent to them for this purpose only, most of which comes from the U.S., neither has China.

Perhaps we should concentrate on this thread on Iran, and not on what the U.S. or any other country have or have not done.

The number is still ridiculously high.

One nuclear weapon would not destroy Israel. Ten possibly could.

If Israel acts like a spoiled brat with a nuclear bomb then Iran will act like, hmmmm, Ayatollah Khomeini with a nuclear bomb.


I applaud civilian power reactors. If they wanted it for exclusively civilian uses, i.e. economics, then there would be no reason to pursue uranium enrichment. They could buy uranium, have it enriched to reactor grade somewhere else and then put it in their reactors. All in a fully open program.

But they didn't do that.

Russia has not reduced, or taken care of, many of their nuclear weapons which they were supposed to dismantle in the accord with the other G8 nations, despite the Russian government recieving most of the money which these nations were sending to Russia for that purpose.

One would be more than enough to destroy any possible retaliation by Israel. BTW, Israel is about 20,330 sq km, a bit smaller than New Jersey.

Where have officials of Israel stated they will attack Iran with a nuclear bomb?... Or that they are going to wipe Iran off the map?
