Turkey will be releasing Mehmet Ali Agca, the man who shot former Pope John Paul II in 1981, as early as this week, according to reports:

NY Newsday/AP

ANKARA, Turkey -- A court has approved the release of the man who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, saying he completed his prison term in Turkey, the semiofficial Anatolia news agency reported Sunday.

Mehmet Ali Agca was extradited to Turkey in 2000 after serving almost 20 years in Italy for shooting and wounding the pope in St. Peter's Square in Rome. His motives for the attack remain unclear.

Agca, 46, was expected to be released as early as Monday.

Wow! I know the Pope forgave him, but I'd think he'd be too dangerous to release.

I wonder if any of the conspiratorial aspects surrounding him and the assassination attempt will be elucidated...

Why's that? Because there is another Pope? I'd be more worried about his safety now though, honestly. I'm sure there are tons of religios nutjobs who would love to see him die.

He was in prison in Turkey for another murder when he escaped and tried to kill the Pope, so the Pope wasn't the only person he's attacked.

Sounds like a dangerous guy to me.

Actually, I think HE is safer in jail. Once he gets out,
there will be a ton of people gunning for him. Some
to keep him quiet, some because he abandoned Islam,
and some to make a name for themselves.

Another murder? I thought he only shot and wounded the Pope?

Hey, read Red Rabbit.

It was Alec Baldwin, I mean Harrison Ford, uh...Ben Affleck? who saved the Pope.

Clancy knows all!

I think it might have been "attempted murder" (weal LOL), but it was in Italy, where they have some intersting charges they can lay as a response to the Mafia.
