Memory alloys have existed since the fifties. Whether it was reverse engineered or not I cannot say and will not speculate in the absense of evidence. They are cool materials though and could be used in a multitude of stuff and are used in car doors now, you know those dent resistent ones I'm sure you've seen the commercial with the shopping cart hitting the door at exagerated speed. It also may be used as an artificial muscle in Bionic arms eventually. The uses are really endless.
