installing or re-installing xp is real easy and automated,...but it kinda like trashes some of the 'other' data you have aquired, and maybe doesnt recognise third part software, or hardware add-on's...but lets hope we dont have to do any of that

After 3 hours of downloading updates, things seem to be working better and faster. I'll let ya know if it doesn't fix the problems.

What is wrong with this 'picture'?

For examble AVG is totally free, and as good anti-virus as norton..

Good to hear you got that all sorted now Mags...still reckon the suggestion of literally 'punching' information into it would have worked...that or something large and heavy...

let a geek help,

for a very good free anti virus get www.grisoft.com...

For firewall, get zonealarm or if your good with computers/firewalls get outpost both have a basic free and pay service

and if you dont want/cant download anti virus software go here
housecall.trendmicro.com...

click install on the utlity promote

now, install the windows blaster update AFTER you kill it with anti virus

now after this is all said and done, put windows on auto update

same for anti virus and firewall

Thank you, but I already downloaded windows updates and it took 3 hours or more after being booted many times, so I'm not going through that process again..

As for the links, I will certainly check into them

I don't wanna sound like I sold my soul to microsoft or something, but critical and recommended updates from windowsupdate.com should always be applied, or else you're gonna get hitted again when a new virus comes out. Vulnerabilities in windows are discovered regularly, and that ain't changing tomorow.

But if you're on a dial-up modem, leave the automatic function to off. The best would be for you to bring your computer at someone's house you know who have high speed internet. They release almost 3 to 5 critical updates a month.

I am on dialup, and on autoupdate, and they feed me an update every week or so...no problem.

I like norton becouse they are the fastest to feed a new dat, auto update too, and the dats are always fresh.

McAfee uses a norton engine, as they got cought stealing from norton, and the others dont have the same resources as norton.

I am sold, after the last bout of worms!

AVG grisoft antivirus and zonealarm are both very good applications. Both times you have the choice between the free version or the paid pro version.

Even if you stick with the free versions you still have good products.

i agree norton is one of the best pay anti virus

avg comes out with updates just as fast as norton and macfe

avg was the first to catch the blaster worm, the first for the love virus, eta

and yes, even if you have 2.8 modem GET THE M$$ updates

the fix for the blaster warm came out a month before there was a blaster warm

but i just disabled pluge and play

P&P is a major hole in windows

and did you guys know, that M$ keeps a few ports forced open?
