A mystery ailment has been spreading in Chechnya since December 15 of this year to young girls who show symptoms that indicate poisoning. The head of Shelkovskaya administrative district, Huseyn Nutayev, suggested that nerve gas could be responsible for the illness, although noone is certain yet as to the cause of the illness. The illness also appears to be affecting only young girls.

On 17 December, regional authorities said they had opened an investigation into the mysterious disease and for two days it looked as if the ailment had abated.

But Alimkhadzhiyev said new cases were reported on 19 December.

"On [19 December], another 12 children were brought to our hospital from Starogladovskaya. Most of them were suffocating, jumping on their beds, and shouting as if in a state of panic," Alimkhadzhiyev said. "It looked as if they were all suffering from psychosis. Our initial diagnosis was poisoning. That same evening, we admitted another two girls who were in an even more serious condition. Another two children were brought to us this morning. All in all, we now have 19 children [in the hospital]."

Alimkhadzhiyev said that the children suffer from bouts of sickness that last from 2 to 15 minutes and that the rest of the time they show no symptoms of illness.

Apparently, all the children affected by the mysterious disease are girls.

According to Chechnya's deputy health minister, Sultan Alimkhadzhiyev, experts from Moscow were expected to investigate and diagnose the illness soon.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the chemical spill from the Chinese plant.

Oh my, this is sad and scary news. Don't you find it curious that they are all children? It seems that would assist in determining the source. EDIT: Ok, my coffee just kicked in. They are not ALL children.

In a case like this finding out it was a deliberate act might be the lesser of the evils. If its a sickness that is spreading, or a matter of severe contamination - that would be much much worse to deal with.

Souljah might be right in this, i also saw a couple of other links with news in the link i provided which might have something to do with this.

Russia Warns Of Radioactive Pollution At Chechen Plant

www.rferl.org...

Could the radioactive pollution have affected a water supply of schools?

It is a bit strange that it seems only young girls are being affected.

I found this Statement Scary:

"This is not a one-day problem. This problem of radiation leaking into Grozny's air has been going on for a decade." - said by a member of Chechnya's emergencies committee.

Radiation levels are 58,000 times above normal.

Interesting. So is it radicals in the muscovite government trying to kill off the prospects of the checnyans producing their next generation, or is it radicals in the islamic insurrection that are punishing girls that are not proper enough for them? This is definitly something to watch.

The reason you remember Grozny, is because it was one of the main areas of fighting during the Second Chechen War in 1999. It was also on December the 22nd of 2002 where nearly 75people were killed after a suicide bombing one of the largest in the region.

An update on this story has come up.

As many people in Chechnya are still suffering from what doctors, who have treated the sick, call " an intoxication of unknown aetiology" (poisoning), now the experts which the Russian officials sent, are saying that there was no intoxication, but that it has all been caused by mass hysteria. Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian reporter who lives and reports what is happening in Chechnya, thinks it is probably a coverup.

When a sinister illness hit schoolchildren and their teachers in war-torn Chechnya in December, doctors were convinced it was a case of poisoning. Then the government came up with its own diagnosis - mass hysteria. Is there an official cover-up going on? Anna Politkovskaya reports
...........................
For the past 12 years, those living and working in Chechnya have been aware that federal forces were testing new types of weapons. The story of what happened in the Shelkovsk district is simply the biggest such case.

In December last year, there were reports of mass poisonings at schools in the Shelkovsk region. Just before new year, a government commission published its official verdict: there was no need to worry - there were no poisonings, it was mass psychosis due to stress. But did anyone in Chechnya believe these explanations?

One wonders if two schools for strictly girls were involved. I have more thoughts on this development, but I will reserve them until there has been an update on this issue.

Mass hysteria is a waste-basket diagnosis, but it is possible, it has been documented, right?

I would definitely be looking at girls schools and other similar places for clues, given the fact that this has only effected females so far (right?).

At the same time, the symptoms sound a bit like posession. I was reading an interesting book a few months ago that touched on demonic posession as a manifestation of civil unrest. Could it be that societies that are restrictive and despotic create these symptoms in people, who are desperate for some sort of release?

I guess anything's possible.

LOCALS BELIEVE RUSSIAN MILITARY IS POISONING CHECHEN CHILDREN

On December 17, the Commission went to Shelkovskoy. Novaya gazeta published Efimov's report from the trip, which said, "The examination of the victims revealed the following pattern of the poisoning progression. The source of the poisoning is located in the main building of the school (because being in [the school] is the only thing that this group of victims has in common) presumably on the second floor. The poisoning may have been through breathing, but body contact is also possible. The toxic substance was either liquid or solid releasing toxic vapors." Efimov's report said that it was impossible to determine the nature of the poisonous gas without special equipment and chemicals (Novaya gazeta, January 12).

Clearly the Russian authorities are hiding the truth about the poisoning. Their explanations that the children's convulsions were the result of nervous exhaustion are patently absurd. "If the problem is nerves then the whole population in Grozny and Vedeno district, areas of the most intensive hostilities in Chechnya, should lie in convulsions," says Khusein Nataev, head of the Shelkovskoy district administration (Novye izvestiya, December 25).

Looks like they need to do adequate testing at the school before jumping to conclusions. Reminds me of mercury poisoning. Let's hope they tested for that.

Federal troops engage militants in Chechnya, seize mercury

Mercury poisoning symptoms

1. Psychological Disturbances (erethysm)
Irritability, Nervousness, Fits of Anger, Memory Loss, Lack of Attention, Depression, Low Self Confidence, Anxiety, Drowsiness, Shyness/timidity, Decline of Intellect, Insomnia, Low Self Control.

"The following day, we learned that all people who were suffering from apparent poisoning were girls, aged between 12 and 16," Alimkhadzhiyev said.

Source from original post.

Girls between the age of 12 to 16. Children reaching the biological child-bearing age. Could it be that future generations are the target?

Based on hormone levels in 12-16 year old girls it would not be hard to use them as a catylist for a new bioware test product. Or it could be something comon to what girls there eat.......something different than boys.

Could also be residual radiation levels affecting there "ovaries"

What about the cause of the previous "young women going zainy" episode...

Ricin poisoning... by unsafe grain storage.

It could cause the symptoms... including the off & on symptoms.
