I've played Half-Life 1 many times. It has to be one of the best 1st person shooter games ever made. There are some great memories of playing that game.

To me the G-men are either really secret governments agents who check up on you and coerce you into working for them. They could also be similar to the men in black. Maybe testing you, or maybe just observing you to find out if they want you to be one of them.

It is hard to really say who they are, but I'm sure the guys at valve or sierra have a clue.

The only reason I havent played Half-Life 2 is because my computer blows. Hopefully I'll be able to get a new one soon.

Well, I haven't played Half Life 2 but know quite a bit about the storyline.

One theory is that the G Man is actually Gordon Freeman from the future who has gone back in time to help himself.
Reasons-
Gordon Freeman they both include each others names.
Apparently their eyes are the same colour.

Also at the end of HL2, I think the G-Man says "We've been watching you Gordon, and people will pay for your services." or something along those lines.
