The United States is in Iraq. That's a given. The question posed is, regardless the reasons -- right or wrong -- that the US used to justify entering Iraq, the US is there. What should the US now do? Should the US "stay the course" and remain, as President Bush would have the US do? Or, should the US leave? But here is the rub, if the US leaves, the world can certainly expect a continuation of the bloodbath with inter sectarian and factional violence. With the probable result being a worse situation.

What should the US do? Stay? or Go?

It still depends on the situation, but for now staying will do.

I don't think the US can just flat out LEAVE. Chaos would erupt, and everything that America has worked so hard for in the past couple of years would go up in a cloud of smoke. However, I do think that the US needs to step back, and the Iraqis need to step up. It's time that the US stops holding Iraq's hand and lets them do the things that an individual, democratic country does.

Permanant bases are being built in Iraq now. There will always be an American presence in Iraq from now on. The oil intrest must be protected.
Most of the military will eventually come home to be replaced by contractors from many nations but paid for by American tax dollars. The only way I see for there not to be an American presence in the Mid East is, If an Arab alliance forms and convinces the oil companys that the Arabs own the oil.
