Does any1 here know anything about Gypsies secret language. Supposedly its unwritten & they are the only ones who understand it. Also ive heard stories about them stealing babies & are all thieves. The thieves part is believable but the stealing babies part is a lil far fetched. So ive heard alot, just wondering if anyone has any facts.

I've heard stories about [insert despised ethnic group here] being [pick all that apply: satanists/baby-killers/constitutively stupid].

Why beleive the BS?

The gypsies are a group that is generally put on the edge of society, no doubt because of a contribution on their own part too. That hardly means that a gypsy is an inverterate theif/killer, anymore than 'everyone in harlem is a drug-dealer' or anything like that.

The secret langauge is interesting, I'd be interested in hearing more about that.

Ok let me first say that I may be a gypsy descendant but I don't live the "life" of a gypsy like that which is portrayed on certain TV news magazines. I have seen some like Dateline and maybe 20/20 that tell a story of, mostly southern, gypsies that make their living off of "scamming" people by receiving money for odd jobs and disappearing before the work is done and other related "scams",and live a bizarre life that includes arranged underage marriages. I probably did come from that but where I'm from (providence, RI ...area) most were hard working and came from a very blue collar background, common employment was paving and masonry work as well as carpentry. The real name of the "language" is Romaney or Rumney (depending on how you pronounce it) The "Rom" coming from "Romania" thus this is where most Gypsies were thought to originate from. But being Gypsies it's hard to track down just where everyone is actually from and as such tracing back family lines can be a challenge since so much traveling and intermixing among races was common. There is in fact a "language" and it is for the most part unwritten. Some words that I know are as follows: Man=mush, Woman= Juval, Child= Chavy, Dog= Jukal (or Juqual) Drunk=Poged (or Pogad) Look at the= Dicada

There are many more (obviously) but these are just a few off the top off my head. Many don't know that the Gypsies were severely persecuted during the holocaust and many died during this period, I myself didn't know this until I visited the Holocaust museum in Wash, DC. It wasn't just the Jews, and that was a surprise to me. I am trying to track down some more gypsy language and will help out if I can.

I am a member of a race called "Jenisch" We are gypsies who live in Switzerland. Some people have called us the blond gypsies. There are only 35,000 left in the world. I have participated in a gene pool study with the university of Zurich and their results indicatethat the "gypsies" of the modern world are mostly descendents from a mix of Jews and a tribe of untouchables from India.

The PC word for gyspsies are Rom. Even though the Rom have many branches including the Sinti and the Jenisch. There are Rom in every part of the world. They are truly a landless people.

The Rom have been persecuted for many years. Here in SWitzerland it was a pogrom called "Children of the streets" It started in the early 1900's and ended in 1973. My greatgrandmother, my grandmother and my mother were all victims. Basically they were taken away from their families and put in homes were they were used for cheap manual labor. Many women were sterilizedi n order to stop the "gypsy menace".

Today only about 5,000 Jenisch live the traditional life style of Rom, which is traveling via caravan and working at such things as candle making, knife sharpening, knitting, and pottery. Like in any group of 5,000 people there is always going to be criminals! The rest of the Jenisch live much more integrated lives in Swiss society.

I am very proud of this unique hertiage.

There is no secret language. Its just another language. Here are some words I know

Woman: Shega
young woman: Shegalli
Money: Lobe
Police: Schmir
shame: Shumla
man: Yok
child: Gof
cigarette: Dumu
non rom: bur

Here in Portugal we have many Gypsies, but they are almost all from the Spanish "branch", not the Romanian.

They speak the language, and we use some of words derived from that language in our slang, like "gajo" and "chaval" for "man" and "boy", respectively.

As with any other minority, they are litle know by their neighbours. I have seen a documentary where they said that the Gypsies had more of their children stolen to sell to rich people than the (few) they stole.

Here in Portugal the Gypsies (Ciganos) are almost allways merchants in open markets, selling clothes. Some are criminals, but so are the ones from other minorities. Some try to live a "normal" life, in my appartment block there lives a Gypsie family, and they are no difference between them and the the others.

The fact that they were persecuted by the Nazis is litle know, maybe because they do not have enough money to pay the lawyers needed to present charges against the Nazis and ask for their gold back.

wow ok let me explain i was about to post about a "dialect" some people still use or actually still know about (as it is just fading in the aether) . I am from the grand duchy of Luxemburg in Europe (not far from Switzerland) , we speak Luxemburgish (amongst other languages ) but there still is a "secret" language my grand-parents used to tell me about and some words can still be found in the more "classic" Luxemburgish , and it is called "Jeinesch" , that is more or less all i know about it .
Thanks for your post , got a more precise idea of the origins of "Jeinesch" now

here a few words i know :
beautiful/hot girl = kant moss (no not kate moss
eventhough)

found an article on the Luxemburgisch Wikipedia site jeinsesch

haha You like Dags? Yeah I like Dags!
Great film

I've got a split decision on Gypsies, I admire the way they go against "most" of the rules of our country, and in most cases they have got the police scared to do anything about them. But I don't like the way they abuse the land they use and leave it for others to clean, also they are known to steal a thing or two - but I guess who itsn't these days huh?

I often think that the reason its so poorly known is because they were nearly wiped out! The jews certainly suffered the greatest number of losses, but the gypsies and the like were already very small groups and, from what I understand, suffered a far greater percentage loss.

Yes this is very true. many countries refused entry of Gypsis even though they had passports, for example here in Switzerland my fathers side of the family was murdered becasue Switzerland would not let them reneter the country from Germany where they had been traveling. Even though they had Swiss passports. Some Jenisch families here have recived some monies for thiese crimes committed against them.

In the end Switzerland was successful in their program to Integrate or eliminate the Jenisch. There are peole who are jenisch and don't even know it.

In the early 1800's there was a big push in central Europe to get rid of the Gypsy Menace. Many Jenisch went "underground" changing their names and professions in order to not be persecuted. Today there are jenisch in every European country and many who do not even know they are. I will ask the professor who researches this subject if there is a history of the Jenisch in Luxemburg.

One competing theory is that the Jenisch are aftually Jews. Any one who knows anything about european history knows that Jews often had to go in hiding as well. There is some historical and genetic evidence that the Jenisch branch of gypsies may have Jewish origins.

I had a Romanian gypsy for a roomie for about 2 years. She was from a 7th generation of gypsies whose Mothers only had one female Scorpio female child for at least 400 years her Mom told me.
She was awesomely beautiful and was like any other person, but for the fact she could summon people with her mind.
I learned a lot from her, and patience is one of those aspects.
If one did not know her, they would just think of her as a beautiful female.
They cannot help it if they are mysterious..

One well known gypsy that has influenced my life is the guitarist, Django Reinhardt.

This man single handedly created a new musical language still spoken by jazz musicians today.

If you are unfamiliar with his music; give it a listen, it will make you happy.

Peace

Except for possibly the language part, it is a load of garbage, probably propagated by the fact that quite a bit of racism exists against gypsies in some parts of Europe. Recall that along with the Jews in the Holocaust, other minority groups also suffered, and one of them was the gypsies. As far as I am aware, they've done nothing to deserve that kind of reputation, either.

I know two clans of Romamian Gypsies here. They call themselves the Evans clan and the Mitchell clan. The head of the Evans clan is the so called 'leader of the Gypsies' around here. I went over to his house one time to pick up some money and noticed he had a tall gold chair. That's when I learned alot about how Gypsy clans deal with everything amongst themselves.

I learned how the head of the Gypsies has the power to control the lives of the other clan members and how he is the head of the Gypsy Court with its' own laws. He can also 'blackball' a clan member meaning no other gypsy can ever have anything to do with that person ever again. Whatever he says goes, period.

Most of the Gypsies that go by the old ways here are Rom and are used car dealers or some other type of salesmen and the women are fortune tellers, stuff like that.

All in all a good bunch of people but hard to deal with in business as far as my first hand knowledge. A few are dishonest. The Evans clan here looks down on the dishonest ones because the clan leader looks down on it and all the Evans members do what he says. There are some Mitchells' that are crooks though. Of course there are other smaller groops I know nothing about.

A funny; The Gypsy leader told me a story that was passed down through his clans' history. This is what he said:

A gypsy boy was at the Crucifixion of Jesus and he stole a spike that was intended to be driven through Jesus' foot. Jesus looked upon the boy and blessed him for stealing the spike and this is why to this day the Gypsies consider it fine to steal from the non-gypsies.

Please note that Rom does not refer to Romania or Rome. Your travellers may well be Romanian but even if they are from Chicago they would still be Rom. ( See wikipedia for details)

You stated: "A few are dishonest" This statement would apply to any group of people. You got a hundred priests? A few would be dishonest. A hundred grannies? I BET my life savings there would be a few dishonest grandmas out there.

Today the word Gypsy is usually not used in a very positive context. That's too bad. They have a very intresting and indepth history. They are honest , hardworking, and very family oriented. They are nomads and that does indeed mean that the buck really does stop somewhere. Someone has to lead a group of people traveling together. They are nomads. Nomads usually don't practice democracy, becasue it isn't practical in a small group.

The reason the the Rom have a reputaion for stealing is simple. There were times when they had to steal. Imagin you have your family, it is winter, game is sparse, no one in the villages you have visited need pots scrubbed or knives sharpend. The local priest won't help becasue many other groups have been here in recent weeks, what's left? This was a reality for many years for my people. In Switzerland the Jenisch were systematically and openly discriminated against until the mid 70's. Today the discrimination is subtle. After many years of persecution many Jenisch hid their roots and forgot about their unique heritage. This means the Swiss government has been mostly successful. Most Jenisch have integrated or disapeared.

On a quick personal note: I was recently looking for a new place to live. My last name is Jenisch but there is also a large family that has the same name who are not Jenisch. Anyway this older lady asked me which "last name" family I was part of, The ones from Zug or the ones from Graubunded, The Jenisch are from Graubunden. I lied and said I was part of the Zug clan. I felt like total crap when I left there. Still do. But I won't deny my heritage ever again. The price is too high.

The Holocaust not only wiped out 6 million Jews and (one estimate) 220 000 Gypsies we can't forget the other persecuted peoples/ groups. Homosexuals, liberals, dissedents, Slavs, Jehovah's witnesses, mentally and physically disabled, communists etc. It makes you wonder how any1 could be declared 'legally' German?
