Has anyone heard that the government can now map IP addresses to a physical location. They are using it to quickly and accurately find the location of suspects. Also many police forces will actually use GoogleEarth to look at these locations.

This was in the free Law Enforcement Technology magazine I recieved a few days ago.

I've heard of it, but it is only accurate to a degree. Consider making a long distance or international call to a dialup ISP. How do you locate the person in that case?

Yeah, so? Civilians have the same sort of thing, whois. No big deal. Much in the same way your phone number can be traced to a location, your IP, basically your internet address, can be traced to your location.

Nothing new.

True but with a Whois it really doesnt give that much information about the person behind the IP it really only gives information about the company that supplies the IP

That's where the difference between civilian and military comes into play.
Same as GPS technology.

LOL yea. I so want access to this kind of technology though, thats would be great... Dangerous for the public yes... but great ^^
