I was going thorugh the Todays Post, saw this, and just wanted to add something. It probably won't help anything, but...
I came across ATS by doing a Yahoo search on "Lost Civilizations". I was trying to find information about the underwater Japanese pyramids; anyway... your site tag-line seemed the most interesting. After reading a few topics, I signed up.
To me, I don't thinka news brief would geatly add... not as much as word of mouth. What you have here is something great. It isn't lunatic conversations, but rather thought out and well researched.
Anyway... I guess what I'm trying to say is this: something good always draws crowds. Now if ATS was a bit more... fringe...

I hope there's a backup on those HDDs. I would certainly hate to see any loss of the information here.

About the server and such. Is it possible to use the next sum of money on buying your own box and going dedicated? The way it sounds you are on a managed box by yourself. Do you have the time for what it takes to go dedicated? It would be cheaper in the end because you would pay one time for the server and then just pay for power, pipe and rack space per month.

I'm certainly remembering to click the advertisers. I noticed another one at the bottom of a few pages that I hadn't seen before.

Have you gotten together some specs on hardware and got some prices? Have you checked on dedicated pricing vs managed pricing? I have worked for a web hosting company for 4 years now so I have a little background on it (although I surely wouldn't recommend my company). I would certainly shop around and then maybe you can bring it up to the active portion of the 2375 members.

I just want to help. This site freakin rox and I haven't even explored half of it yet. I'll keep clickin the banners and if you have some kinda of "fund drive" to get some better equipment I'm there. Doing this alone though, as far as keeping up with it locally, has got to be rough. Maybe it will all work out and the advertisers will begin to compensate for the load.

Good Luck

The current machine is 99% dedicated to ATS. I have 4 other sites for myself and family members on the machine, but they amount to not even a drop in the CPU/bandwidth bucket.

And this is an unmanaged rack-space machine now... meaning I manage 100% of the box. We're moving to a dual-Xenon box with RedHat 9 very soon. The increased processor speed, HD speed, and mySQL 4.x should be a boost that, on paper, enables us to handle at least 5x the previous traffic spikes of 250 concurrent users.

And yes, there are multiple backups of everything on the machine.
