AFP - Ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein has reportedly been in secret negotiations with US forces for the past nine days.

According to the Sunday Mirror report, Saddam was demanding safe passage to the former Soviet republic of Belarus in exchange for information on weapons of mass destruction and his bank accounts.

Excerpt:

US President George W Bush was being kept up to date on the talks by his national security adviser Condoleeza Rice who was coordinating negotiations led by US general Ricardo Sanchez, the Sunday Mirror said.

Sanchez is the commander of US forces in Iraq.

"A representative of Saddam in Western-style civilian clothes came to coalition people at Tikrit at sunset on September 12. He led them to a house where the security official was waiting," the Sunday Mirror quoted a senior Iraqi as saying.

"The discussions are now going on under the direct authority of General Sanchez," the source said, according to the newspaper.

The source maintained that Saddam had decided to seek a deal "because he is desperate, trapped and finding fewer and fewer people willing to give him shelter," the tabloid said.

Most interesting words from excerpt to pull apart its veracity:

* Sunday Mirror, tabloid

* Bush, Rice, Sanchez

* "representative", "Western style civilian clothes"

* Tikrit (the current Iraq War disinformation centre, based on how many false reports have originated there)

I certainly don't believe this. How would only Saddam himself know where WMD are and none of the multitude of already captured high ranking Iraqi military personnel and scientists be unwary of their locations?

Obviously the answer is that since nobody else knew, Saddam wouldn't be the sole knowledge base to such information. Bull# story.

ninemsn is just the website outlet of the Nine television network (top rating free-to-air) in Australia.

It is not unusual for the site to have pro-Howard or pro-Bush admin opinions, but it is unusual for it to be way off beam in what it elects to cover. The story will be gone tomorrow without a trace, some junior news editor has just grabbed it from the Sunday Mirror thoughtlessly and will get a slap on the wrist for being a cheeky monkey.

Please note the date of this action, compared to the upcoming Sept 24 OPEC meeting....

I believe that Saddam is very much in communication with the US government... after all, he needs his orders doesnt he?

I believe we see the stage being set before our eyes... what part we will see played out before us, we have yet to learn...

I've read the story this morning in Austrian newspapers but they do mention Sunday Mirror as a source, so no independent confirmation.

www.foxnews.com...

Quoting an unnamed "senior Iraqi," the UK's Sunday Mirror reported that Saddam had sent his English-speaking representative to negotiate with American forces in the dictator's hometown of Tikrit.

The aide led soldiers to a letter, allegedly from Saddam, asking for a safe exile to the ex-Soviet republic of Belarus in exchange for information about bank accounts holding tens of millions in pillaged money and details of the elusive weapons of mass destruction.

Lieutenant Colonel William MacDonald, spokesman for the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division which controls Tikrit north of Baghdad told Reuters that the Mirror story was inaccurate.

"The 4th Infantry Division has not had any contact with any former regime members regarding Saddam Hussein's disposition," he told Reuters.

Another tabloid rumor smashed.

Heelstone, do you actually think so?

Of course they wouldnt tell people if they were making a deal with Saddam..

But this whole topic is bogus, as the deal was allready made before 'battle of Bagdad'.

After US got its bottom kicked big time in the battle for 'Saddam international'.

(US was driven out once, and had to face couple of fierce counter attacks.. that almost succeeded.. hundreds died and wounded on both sides.. and both sides lost plenty armor..)

And US military figured it was better to make deals with the regime, than fight even more bloody and loooooooooooooooooong battle for Bagdad itself.

This is one report by the U.S. military and Fox News that I believe. No reason to lie in this particular case.

O yes there is.

As if they admit that they had made a deal, it would be againt all the things they have said.

As this would kinda fall short of hanging Saddam.. and that was the plan.. to hang Saddam.. wasnt it..

Well, I'm merely suggesting that it wasn't a lie that the U.S. military wasn't in talks with Saddam. I'm sure that the CIA or whatever agency that is actually in touch with him is pampering him at this very moment though.
