Trees?
Why are there trees there anyway? Ok Steve, you got me! Maybe someone planted it so the area wouldn't seem so empty. I never realized there were trees there.

Looks like it used to be bigger.......there is an outer ring of trees where the old water line would have been. So that section would have been shallower, and the area now containing water would be the 'deep end'. Maybe less used now, not being refilled for some time, considering the second ring of trees is fairly well grown.

It might have been deep/big enough for some sort of testing, whether an entire sub would have been put in there or not......

I'm not so sure it would have been recreational.....looks to be too small for water skiing, and a nice clean, maybe indoor, swimming pool would go over better with the high paid, maybe used to a sterile environment crowd. ??

My guess would be waste water, sewage treatment or holding for other excess water. If the facility has been 'downsized' or partially moved to another location ( as is rumored), that could account for the decrease in the amounts of water they would use and need to treat.??

Why is this still a thread?

As has been pointed out in this and other threads, this little reservoir is Slater Lake. It was built as a recration area in the 1960s. They stocked it with fish and surrounded it with trees. It was named after Col. Hugh "Slip" Slater, commander of the 1129th Special Activities Squadron "Roadrunners" that flew the A-12. Starting in the late 1970s, the area around Slater Lake was used for placement of various Soviet-type radar systems. That is why there are all those buildings and roads around the pond.

The Roadrunners had a nine-hole golf course, too. It was located closer to the north end of the base. They also had a pool, tennis court, and a softball field.

The picture looks like a standard ammo bunker arrangement. You see these on bases all over.

However, we are straying off topic and the discussion at hand was Man Made Lakes at Area 51
