Bush: Military may have to help in pandemic
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush said Tuesday that the possibility of an avian flu pandemic is among the reasons he wants Congress to give him the power to use the nation's military in law enforcement roles in the United States.

The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 bans the military from participating in police-type activity on U.S. soil. Bush began discussing the possibility of changing the law last month, in the aftermath of the government's sluggish response to civil unrest following Hurricane Katrina.

"The Department of Defense would assume the responsibility for the situation, and come in with an overwhelming amount of resources and assets, to help stabilize the situation," McClellan said.

Right now they are prepared to treat about 1% of the population when the outbreak happens. There is currently a bill amounting to $4 billion which is supposed to raise that up to %50 of the population. (I doubt that it will be even that high with the way these people spend money.) But let's say they do hit that mark of %50, that is still not a happy ending IMO. To put it into perspective, think of every member in your immediate family, then remove half of them by means of Flu-like sickness and respitory failure.

On CNN today they were discussing the fact that such a situation of this flu hitting America and causing the deaths of atleast hundreds of thousands of people is inevitable. They said it's not an "if" but a "when" type of event and estimates of a hundred thousand plus deaths is by no means a worse case scenario. Other estimates range from 2 to 150 million or worse.

It would not be impossible or even hard at all to sneak into a supposed quarantined city to see if there was really a disease under way. If Avian Flu does brake out you better hope the Army does cut off the outbreak. Avian Flu is 55% lethal to date and this virus strain has never been in the human population in recorded history.

h5n1 types of flu haven't been in the living human population, not any population ever. IOW, it was long ago enough that everyone has died from the last time an h5n1 type of flu was spreading amoung humans.
