the first program I remember , and I'm not sure how well it's know outside of the UK , was Rainbow. I remember the old black and white version, which was first broadcast in 1972 , so I would only have been 2 years old.
So at the time rainbow looked like this

a bit before the time of the faces that became best known for the show

At around the same time, I also remember seeing this a lot on my tv screen

this was back in the days when you didn't get 24 hour TV , so you would quite often have to entertain yourself by staring at the test card! Happy days !

Emergency. About Station 51. Mostly followed two paramedics from Rescue 51, but at least once every episode the entire station got called out for an emergency. I loved that show. hehe

It would have to be.....

.....which lead to my first toys that I actually remember playing with.....

The Steve Austin/Bionic Man doll had a bionic eye you could look through and the Oscar Goldman doll had a briefcase that did something but I can't remember exactly what. Man that show is second only to Miami Vice on my all-time favs list.

Peace

Probably Camberwick Green, Trumpton, Jamie and his magic torch or that program with Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty and Hamble and the shaped windows eh Playschool thats the name. Also in Scotland we had Glen Michaels Cartoon Cavalcade.
Ahh brings back memories

PS I also hated that testcard.

I grew up in the bush in Queensland, Australia. We only had one channel, but for some reason we got all these cool Japanese cartoons. So the earliest shows I remember seeing were things like Kimba the White Lion:

G Force: Battle of the Planets:

and Star Blazers:

Then I have memories of obscure shows like The Sooty Show which I had begun to suspect existed only in my head until I found them on the Net.

Edit

Any one remember Super Ted

Oh man, I'd forgotten Super Ted!!!

Just what was his secret magic word anyway? What about Inspector Gadget? Was Dr Claw his brother or what?!?

Captain Kangaroo. That's the first.

I remember in 2nd and 3rd grade racing home to see
Dark Shadows. I loved that show.

BTW - what parent in their right mind would allow a
6 year old to come home from school and watch Dark
Shadows?? That wasn't too smart of my parents.

When I was 12 or so there was a British show that I
loved to watch - 'My Partner the Ghost'. It was about
a ghost named Marty who helped his partner who was
a private detective or something. The partner was the
only one who could see Marty.

Yep, seen a lot of the shows posted here. My first was probably Winnie the Pooh, but I also remember Zorro and Sky King pretty well.

My first mainstay though was the Buckshot Show.
